Philadelphia, Dee. 11, 1818.
■ Siaa.Oa; the Slh rastaot, We received, as I have
already had the honor to inftirm yon, the first depes

hand Carter, who brought it from San Francisco, by
the Isthmus route. It weighed 1804

and 330.79 from those/al Feather river. On the 9th'
instant anotherdepojßlewassent by the Secretary
of War; which weighed 223 ounces.
The gold was of t«o sorts m external character,
ibongb apparently not different ns to quality. The
first,'from the “ dry diggings,”, was in grains, which'
v •, averaged from one.to two ponnyweigbts; the other
• variety, from the owarops or margins of the streams,
-being, in. small .-flat spangles, of which, on-an average;
i ,T : »cwould take six or seven to weigh one grain. Of
. ... these,'by lar .the: larger part of the- depcsitea was
composed.
i Tlic gold was melted in six parcels, and the loss
v. jby melting, due to the earthy and' oxidable matter
which disappcarsnnxhis operation, averaged abaet
r .21 per cent, ot the original weight.: -The loss thus
; . - /reported is moderate, and shows that the gold has
. been carefully washed. -•
Assays of the melted gold were made with great
,care, nnd the results showed a vanatiSn in fineness
: ■ from 892 >lo 497 thousandths; the average of the
whole beingB94. This is slightly belhw the stand
art] fineness, which is 900. ;:*
The ivcrago value per ounce of the bullion, be
■ Tore melting, is 818,054; that of the-same in bars;
after melting, is $18,30.
f; : ■ The wht>le:valnc of tho-gold in the two dcpds’ites
4 Was $36,492, Presides-a few ounces reserved in tbc
natue stale for the Secretary ofWar.at his request.:
Very respectfully, your faithful servant,
A- M. PATTERSON, Director.
Hon. R. J, Wali.eb, of the Treasury.
. .v >Jq addition to this, we learn from the St. Joseph

The.Batlvta Rewarded.
. Our telegraphic despatch from- Philadelphia yes

ded the appointments of that city ftnongsl the
Whigs and,Natives. We shall surely not complain
-at this# It shows that the -Governor Is ■ disposed to
.deal fairly .w-ilh both branches of the federal party,
The Natives fought as hard for Johnston as the
Whigs, and they are certainly entitled to equal hon
ors. All. we now ask is, that Gen. Taylor will be
equally.aa-liberal .in rewarding the.; church: burners
with appointments. And in bestowing dus favors;
.he should not Torget-that amphibious class, known
as "Taylor Democrats.”: lie should deal fai.ly with
all his supporters, like Gov, Johnston, evert tnough
it shanld offend the tender sensibilities of the "ultra
whig,”

BST Tho Journal is mistaken, if it supposes that

have been the same; though we no net deny that
the testimony had its due weight. But Maokce was
acquitted, because the yury-did not believe that he
