of the old federal whig, editors and politicians, ate
violently opposed to tins new organization; bat they
will be compelled, eventually, to yield their consents
- Our neighbor of the Gazette,' we observe, IB opposed
to ” Taylor Republican Associations p” buytus in
fiuenae- amounts to little or nothing, and is a very
c marketable commodity. Those who remember witb
what ease he: was induced,' for a: eoOaideration, to
support Mr.Ct&v in 1344—a manwhomhebadjpreri
ously denonneedafc a Slaveholder, ihd an enemy to
the Tariff;—-and > more.recently, with what zeal he
employed bis pen in advocating the election of Gen.
Taylor—may readily conclude that his opposition to
the name of “ Taylor Republican,” will not bo very
formidable. Hear the Gazette:
“Although, as wc said before, we, do not under
stand the exact design of this movement, and have
not , been made acquainted with Ihemotives which
have-originated it, yet we muat enter oar protest
against any measure whiqh appears .to be calculated;
in its nalure.to.wcaken the influence and efficiency,
if npt destroy altogether, the glorious Whig party,
with which it has been our pride and pleasure lo be
associated for so many years.
“Any movement designed to change the name,
or any of the great and leading principles of the
Whig party, lo be successful, must disband the pres.
c ent elective organization, and scatter its; elements
to i tbo winds—thus wantonly throwing away the
- berenlean labor -or years, and. ruthlessly destroy
: ing-os fair a. political fabric as has ever been reared
in the country.
“Why, then, disturb the harmony of existing re
lations—especially just aa: the public mind has be- 1
■ como acquainted with Whig principles, and bas |
been disabused of long and embittered prejudices!

The fact is notorious, that General Taylor was
supported by men of all parties, because hc.repeat
edly declared that m no event would he permit him
self to bo the candidate of a party, or carry out party
views. He accepted of all tho nominations tendered
bun—first the Natives, next the Wbigs, nest the
SouthCarolina-Slaveholdmg Democrats; and finally
he declared that he would gladly have accepted of
thenomtpationof the Baltimore Democratic Con
vention, upon tbe same terms ss the Philadelphia
Whig Convention, to wit • without any pledges be
ing required of him.
Tho Sew York Mirror, tho original Taylor paper
of the North, inserts, with approval, a Washington
letter, from which wo quote a few sentences:
“ It is admitted, I believe, by all except very rabid
wbigs, that in the election of General Taylor to the
Presidency, the principles of the whig parly have
:■ been abandoned; ami, consequently,.tbercsultcao
not be claimed as a whig victory.”

“ Moat people here my the Intelligencer will be
tbe [official} paper. 1 say not. Ifi General Taylor
makes tbe Intelligencer his official organ,t ho; is

and all the political curses that have ever impeded

pledge,'and becomes an ultra—yes, worse than an

We commend these extracts to the especial at
tention of our “ ultra whig ” neighbor of tho Ga
zette. One thing is nos evident; Gen,Taylor will
.have trouble enough before he is in Washington city
many months. His administration, wc sincerclybc
lieve, will bo a perfect fußqre. Whatever course
he adopts, be will disappoint a large portion of his
supporters. If he comes out an “ ultra whig ”
a High Tariff, National Bank, Internal Improvement
Whig—sod selects the National Intelligencer os bis
organ, ho will certainly, as the Mirror says, bo
“DairHiDTBEYO’iDKEDEHPmoH!” On the contrary,
'lf he attempts to break down party, and appoint
Democrats, as well aa Wbigs, to. office, ho will have i
more curses and maledictions showered upon his
head, than ever John Tyler endured 1 Either way
he thins, he will encounter rocks and breakers.
Scylla end Charybdis will stare him in the face,
whichever courso he may steer. This Government i
can never be successfully administered, unless upon
tho pure and honest principles of tho Democratic
