Discussions—An evening spent in the Common
Council chamber, while that body is in aeasran, Is
almoat sufficient to make one hate that principle
which obtains in, this country guarautceingfreodom
of speech. On Monday everting the ques'tion was
whether an ordinance recently adoptedlowering the
grade of liberty street, should be repealed or not.
The bill to repeal was defeated. Then a resolution
instructing the clerks not to record tho ordinance,
and requiring the appointment of a Select Committee
to enquire into the merits of tho whole matter, was
carried. .Both, parties expressed great anxiety to
have an investigation; all appeared to harmonise on
this subject. And yet there was a pointless debate
from the timo tho President called tho members to
their places till half past 10 o’clock, the time or
adjournment! Each member had a proposition to
offer und nearly all had to define positions-in num.
