Wseamo To Tim TzoiLE.-'=The examhaation of
Nfessrii:White . andikreMullen into the affairs of the
Canal Bank, Albany, N. Y., has disclosed more tor.
'ruption than the public could have anticipated. The
books of the bank are in utter confusion; but the ex
aminers have ascertained that the bills of the Bank
in circulation, unredeemed and 'unpaid, amount to
about onehundred and eighty nine thouund dollars;
thatthe Lank is indebted•to individuals, for deposits,
above fifty thotitand dollars and to the State of New
York about sixty.thre`e Ilion:and dollars. They
found so the Bank the ' sum of eleven hundred and
two dollars in coin, and in good current bank bills
tot exceeding ten or fifteen dollar., besides some
'worthless, or almost worthless United States Bank
tills,'of the nominal amount of two hundred end ten I
dollars: The above constitutes all the assets of the
:bank, except their real estate and stocks, and debts
due them—the amount of which has not been aster.
Wiled, owing to the confusion of the books. The
examiners proceed to say this : •
"They are fully satisfied that the assets of said
bank will not be sufficient to pay their debts and De
bilities, independent of the original stock paid in,
and deponents further say that it appears satisfacto
ry to them, from the Looks and papers of said brink,
that more than one half of the amount of theespital
stock of said bank bas, been loaned to, and is now
duo and owing from Di rectors; of . Laid. Bank. And
further, that the late Teller of said Bank, according
to his own testimony before deponents taken, has
been in the habit of making largo loans to many in
dividuals upon his own responsibility and without the
knowledge or authority, or consent of the Directors;
but, as be testifies, with the knowledge and sanction
of the Cashier. That such loans now , due and un
paid, amount, according to deponent's understand
ing, and the best knowledge asderived from the said
Teller's testimony, together with the books and
vouchers,
to at least twenty.five thriuund dellarii.
That said amounts have been loaned princiPally, and
almost or quite entirely, without any notes; en
dorsers, or sureties, but upon simple memorandum
checks, post dated, and months to run. - That the
said amounts, and other largo amounts have , been;
uniformly counted as cash, in making the statements
of the affairs of said Bank, and in calculation! for
and making their semi-annual . dividends. And it
further appears that. Edwin Croswell, one of the
rectors of said*Bank, (~indebted to said Bank abriui
seventy.five thousand dollars, and that John Loyes .
Paige, ono of said Directors, is indebted to said'
Bank for About fif thousand' dollars, for money*
loaned'him by sai dßank, as President of a Glass
Company in the City of Albany, about tho solvent,
of which Glass Company, deponents have no satis
factory knowledge."

French Shepherds. . •
- In my last paper I alluded to the humane treat
ment ofeheep by French:shepherds, who thus induce
their flocks to follo , k them to, and from pasture, in
stead of driiing and alarming them by dogs, as is
done in England. I have. since been informed how
this is effected. The shepherd brings up two or three
lambs by hand, whiih, by following him ever after
wards when called, cause the whole flock to do the
same. But the shepherd , s perpetual call upon these
proteges of his, inducea the flock to move when they
hear his vbice; and to pedrons to whom such scenes
of rural imagery are not devoid of interest, it- is' a
very gratifying sled. This, t 00,16 Classical. Still
us, in his " Theibiad, ,, , compares the parental' care
'and military vigilance of the Grecian general; Eteo
cles, to a shepherd leading, out hie sheep from the
fold; and Homer illustrates the joy which Epees die
' plays on viewing the. discipline of his troops, by
that of a shepherd,. 'on seeing his flock in geed
plight, as lie LEADS them to water.
