Which the'folluwing is an extract:
Next let me tell you bow Senator Can Was treat
ed by the Volunteers. You will recollect that we,
(the Volonteerso were mustered under the act of
May, NG, by which we were allowed 0 3 . 50 Per
month for clothing, and in a circular data August
17th, '47, we were again assured of receiving the
same.- But it seems that Mr. Cass with a good eco
nomical heart, offered' a bid .'to cause' the Veto°,
teer, to be furnished with clothing iu kitid; it the
same rates eccordiog to gradee,a• is provided fur the
troops of the regular antur." Thus you ace he.has
reduced our pay for .clothing from 93,50 to 82,50,
This, 'suppose blithe compensation we get for fight
ing our 'Way to the Capital. As /coo as the tint
Pennsylvanians received news that this famous bill
had passed, they extended a rope across the main road
leading to the City of Alfezies and Azov poor Loin
Cass. Some racers touched by their politics, or
dered it to be cut down, bat the boys bad him in hii
hurt position again soon rifler, where be hot g tilt

Raying, since commeacement of the war, ts
keWa pan In all matters relating to the comfort of
our Volunteers, which have been agitated io Con.
• S ,I am enabled to explain the oofoondedcharge
made, uninteetionally f have no doubt, by Mr. Gnef
agaiost Gen. CMOS.
The bill &mai the Military Committeeorperted by
Gen. Casa, originated with the gallant Colonel DaVS,
who is pre eminently the frir ad of the Volunteeri,
and it was intended fur their betieflt, and ban been
of great service to them. The Volontenn in our
army are allowed by law 3,60 per toonthfor ambit*
themse:ves, while the regular soldiers are clothed by
the government. Io thus couotryoshere clothing is
cheap, thi sun, I. more than sufficient, but when
110 r troops got to Melia, where the prmes of oveiy
thing was greatly enhanceci, ibis sum was found to
be inadequate.' The clothing being scarce, too, the
Volunteers were °llea in distress, while the regulars
were comfortably clad, because the Quriermaster's
department bad an abundance of dothing on hand
fur their use. The distreases of our brans met
were made known to Gen. Cass and others,by letters
from tho army ; and, upon consultation, the bill was
passed, ..11oyiing the Volumene In receive from the
government mores if they desired it, wherever ars
tic es of apparel they might need, at the price it had
cost the United States, which, Oa computation, .0$
found to be $3,60 per month for Pitch man. In ott.
er words, the government agreed to sell to the Vol
unteera their yearly defiling at the rate of $2,60 per
month, while agave to them,by previous laws 83,50 .
per smooth in eash, from whist' to =SO the r ayment.
Thus, you will see Means. Editors, instead of tr
king a; dollar from the Voleateers, A Geo. Can was ,
iostetionolat in giving them a dollar a month more
this they were entitled to by previous laws, And ofl
giving them, too, the only mean by which they
could be furnished with clothing in, foreign land.
Without this law, while the regulars would hare
been well c othed i o n ear well b led tnditiry store,
the equial y meritori as Volunteers might have been
suffenrg for the want of clothing in a distant land,
where they were beyond the reach of sympathy of
tberrrelauveirand friends. No man in this country
has stronger attnehments fur the pritatesokliers than
Gan. Can. Like all men who have risen from hum•
life,! his sympathies and feelings are readily ex
cited in: behalf of those- who hare none to protect
them. fie might forget the demands of an officer
high In command, but could not overlook the wants
of a private soldier. ' •
. It is due to Serg.Graef, tooth/that the humane In
tention of Congress, in the passage of this 'sworn',
for a time interrupted by a decision or the account
antdepaitment, which pito it the construction corn.
plained of by.hien; but, so soon as this tonstructioa
was known - here, the subject was re examined at
the instancewfGen. Can and others, and the Instrac•
lion intended by Congress given to the law ; which
authorizes the seunteers to receive from the public
stores, this same clothing as is now furnished to the
regulars, but does not compel them to take it,—st
$2,50 a month, its actual cost in the United Statists, 1
without transportation or other charges.
As I have heard Serg. Graef spoken of as a gal
lant soldier, he 'will, I am sure, when he comes
home; like a true Pennsylvanian, be among the first
to acknoarledge'the injustice he has done to Gen.
Cass. .. SIMON CAMERON.

There is in; the royal library, a curious manuscript,

built a synagogue in Jerusalem, and in that Sion:.

that city was taken by the Emperor Salim, in 1617.
The manuscript was then seised by a Turkish offi

came into the hands of the celebrated D'Arvicus,
and it was afterwards purchased by an English gen

similar manilbstatione elsewhere, excite the amyl

Our MAO on of them, long since formed, le unchatig

can never gain.
Dot the most amusing circomataece connected
with this letter--signed by eight Federalims and
.Abolitionists—is, that it has been blazoned forth, all
over the country, as a wonderful demonstration of
Democratic sentiment, in one case, of a large nom,

but, at the same time, so fat as we can ascertain, no
ore of them was ever annoyed of favoring, in any
manner, the doctrines of the Democratic party. If,
however, the improclicabka 'or New York have nom.
butted a ticket to evil thein, we fled or. 'fault with
their preference. On the contrary; if they, and
their whole party shall unite on Mr. Veil Deice,
they will be doing nothing more thane simple act of
