ing:—
" It should be a sulject of rejoiciog and eon
gratulation, to every tine „Republican, to find those
principles which have so long directed and controll
ed the action of this Government, so happily per

played the highest mental and moral qualifications!
Equally eniphatical may we speak of Gcn. Butler,
our candidata for the Vice Presidency.",
•
The Hon. B. A. DOUGLASS a Senator from Illinois,
was present, and addressed the assembled multitude.:
after which a number of highly patriotic resolutions
were adopted, amid the most deafening accluma.
tions, from which we select the following:—.
Resolved, That We recognise in Lenin Cass one
of the illustriOns sons of the republic; a democrat,
at once bold, pl;iin, open, and direct; a soldier of
the war of 1812; and a statestuaa of long and emir
nent service—as governor of the Territory of Mich
igan, seven times appointed; as Secretary or War in
the cabinet of Andrew Jackson• ' as senator in Con
greet, and as a representative of OUT country abroad,
where he triumphantly vindicated the great princi
ple which bore our infant navy onward from victory
to victory, and taught a proud foe that she was no
longer mistress of the, occan—"Free trade and sail
ors, rights."
Resolcod, That in William 0. Butler, ofKootocky,
the democracy of the Union have nominated for the
second office in the , gift of the people, a favorite eon
of the great west; a tried patriot, who basserved
;Country in war and in council; one identified with
the early struggles of western civilization, one wbo,
in the war of 1812, and in the late contest with filezi-
Co, has signalized his patriotism and valor by deeds
!b.th of brilliancy and self-devotion, and who, to his
'other high merits, adds the crowning virtue of fidel
ity to the principles of democrar.y.
The democratic German citizens of Detroit have
had a large and most enthusiastic ratification meet
ing in Republic Hall. The Germanief Detroithaie
numerous eloquent 'peeler's who addressed the.
meeting in their native langune. The nomination
of Coss and Butler received a warm suppert.
The Patriot, at Jackson, aays, that in the whole
north-west, Gen. Cass will not only receive the sup
port of the democracy, tint thousands of honest pa
triotic whips will rally round him. His intimate ac
quaintance with the country . , and his knowledge of
its interests and its wants, made his ninsicatton
culiarly popular with the people of Ohio, Indiana,
Illinois, lowa, Wisconsin. Missouri, Mississippi:,and
the whole valley of the Lakes and the Mississippi,
will come up as one man to the support of CASS
and BUTLER. The lake cuuytry particularly is
directly interested in the election of Gcn.Cass.
Dgir The Legislature of Michigan passed an act
prohibiting the circulation of any Bank "notes, or
other evidence of debt issued by any Banking insti
tution ent of that State. The penalty is a forfeiture
of three times the amount, or nominal value of the
bill passed or circulated.
The wiseacres are very fond•of applying this term
to the democratic party, nor do we make the least
objection.
When-we were a boy, and somewhat 'skilled in
ball-playing ; we, used to cry out, when arriving at
the last bass, 4 S yank.! "or a Home! Hence, the
term, aHunar.aa signifies arr Holm , ' And this
re just where we are—al home; in all the principles
and usiget of the party. Tho opposite wing not '
withstanding their pride and boasting, will find us
"to hum" on the 7th of November neat. Gee. Cass
will have struck the ball one last blow, and as we
receire him into the Wurra. HOUSE at Washington,
we shall. shout "Huse PP—Syrovire Democrat.
