TO THE'PUBLIC
. .
The." miner tl hinds" included in the foregoing pro
elamaticin embrace the greater portion of lieweena
and the southern shore of Lake Superior, in the northern
peninsula of Michigan, and arc rendered immensely
valuable by the exhaustless mines of copper and other
ores found therein.
A:considerable number of those mines have already
been discovered in the trap ranges bordering on Lake Su
perior. and within a few miles of it, and from the geolo
gicaliharamer of the country and the explorations al
ready made, it cannot be doubted that others equally, if
not more, valuable will be found throughout this whole
"mineral region."
In come of the Mines now worked, copper is found al
most pure: and in fact, meet of the native copper and
ores yield a greater per-centage than any other yet dis
covered in 'the world. Silver is also found in considera
,ble quantities.
All the necessary materials for the construction of fur
naces, and fuel for smelting, arc found in nhuudnnce in
'the immediate neighborhood of the minced: and the face
of the country is such, that the mines require but little. if
any artificial drainage, endure therefore worked to great
'advantage.
The climate in the winter, thou!, cold, does not inter
rupt the operations of the nutters'; in fact, that season is
considered the most favotable for their operations.
The Tiroximity of these mineral lands to the shore of
Lalce Superior, on which are several safe and excel lent
harbors. and the water eominuniention therefrom by the
Sault Ste. Marie, Lakes Huron, Erie, ac., furnish ready
means of transporting the products of these lands to the
principal markets of. the .Vaited States at a very trifling
cost.
likewise appears from the reports to this office, that
the agricultural lands are of a far finality, producing the
usual culinary vegetables and grass in abundance ; and
no doubt, when the soil is properly tilled. it will be found
favorab:e for grain crops also: and for all these products
a fair price and good market will be found at the mines.
Timber, such as white and yellow piste, sugar maple,
yellow birch, &c., is. In Many places, very abundant, a nd
b,y its thrifty growth, gives evidence of the richness of
the Soil.
Maps shovcing the localities of the mines and other
valuable information relating thereto, derived from the
geological survey, which cannot be embraced in this
brief notice, will he treparetrand deposited with the land
officers at the Sault :ate, Marie, for ins.pcetion, as early an
practicable before the commencement of the public sales.
