OFFICE OF THE POST, FRIDAY Mottxrco, May 1911 i, PAS. 5 We have very little to say to our commercial readers this week. Business has slackened off very much; tint still ibitreets present the appearance of animation: There has been no material variation in prices. Flour has declined, as will be seen from our notice , and so has Sugar while Provisions have remained about as last week, except Butter, which is Out of the market. The rivers are in fine order, and the largest class boats are afloat. Freights are scarce; and there'are but few passengers. Many of the small steamers have gone into the Allegheny trade; running to the breach. , The destruction or the Freeport packet will not be injuriously felt here.. The State will allow a sufficient drawback ; and the tow boat; will afford ample facilities for transportation. The Aqueduct will be rehtti't in about two months. MONEY MATTERS.—Vice have little change to note in the money market. Currency is bought at 2 percent. discount; and the excitement in regard to the notes of certain suspected and broken flanks is in a measure over. We have heard that it is the in tention of Charles M. Reed to take the notes of the Eric Bank, at par, for freight and travel on his Line of Lake Boats. -The rates of exchange on western cities have slightly advanced. Along the rivers they areas follows; Steubenville, 2 per cent.; Wheel ing, 3 per cent.; Marietta, 3 per cent. ; Cincinnati, .11 per cent. ; Louisville, II per cent.; St. Louis, 2 per cent.; Ntshville, 3 per cent.; New Orleans ) 2 per cent. These rates are on time bills. ASHES—AII Sorts of Ashen have been dadlidu ring the Week ; the market is well supplied; and , -demand light. We notice no further decline, tide. ever; and we use about the quotations of last week. There is Some eastern demand; and shipments to some. considerable extent have bcen made. Pots and Scorthings may be set down at 4c., at which there have been some unimportant sales. PeaTls and Sakeratus 60..; and 7c. in retail way. Soda Ash is soldi at 4@61, acconfing•Te.e ‘ ircumstances. ' 'FLOOR.—The receipts yesterday were fair ' but • not so grey as the day previous. Large lots have been *tor away, holders generally preferring to risk the ch a gee in the matter, to taking the present rates. We heard of but one or two sales yesterday, which were at $4,50. A wagon load was sold to a retailer at $4,60. From store the demand is but trifling; we heard of not more than a half dozen dray loads being sold yesterday. Tht price is $4,75. . Tharsday—The receipts yesterday were heavy. and the market dull. Sellers were compelled to walk the streets to find buyers, who were quite shy, and generally re fused to talk to theta. The-break in the canal and the g reat q uantity wharves, en uc'i the d e'!i ' howl remaincu or whether,, Bunter Be eline will occur, we cannot gyess. It is not safe to make predictions about Flour, particularly when dealerstliem selves disag, ree, as they do just now. The as lee s ester day were at 51.5110.1.62; the latter figure appeared to be the ruling rate. Redid li&ar that, lute in the afternoon, a sale was made nt 84,44, but we pip not certain. At all • events. holders were anxious to get $4.50. and failed in many cases. From store the rates were at $4.75, but there were but few sales...We heard of the receipt of a - few lots for shipment. but the greater portion of the re ceipts were for this market. We notieed.that the great , mass of the Flour lay on the upper wharf •-, CHEESE—The market is now very well supplied with - if first rate qtralitfof new Cheese, which sells readily at Wee., inlet* lots; 6613 i in a small way.
