The exchanges re main in favor of New York at all points. The un- Ihrtunate transfer of two millions to New Orleans in gold, a year ago, has disordered the exchanges on that point ever since. There are now eight mil- Hone of specie at New Orleans, with exchange one and a half per cent in flavor of New York. if the Sub -treasury had not removed the coin by force, New Orleans would have been staved this heavy iCktliS . in exchange, or at least a good portion of it. " The exchanges remain in favor of New York, at all points," nays the Journal ; and yet," if sub treasury had not'remcied the coin by force, 2 ) this editor concludes that the exchanges would have been more nearly equal:. •We are really unable to sec how the removal of the two millions of govern ment money to New Orleans, where it -was needed, from New York, where it was not needed, can have made the rest of the country indebted to New York --thereby affecting the exchanges. If bills drawn on New York are based Upon actual shipments , made or intended, and the amount of goods for warded in return for the produce sent to New York, is not greater than the value of that produce, she cannot become creditorto the other commercial points; and if in fair commercial transactions, she becomes creditor to other cities, it is but just and natural that they should pay the difference which that state or things must necessarily produce. In proportion to the indebtedness of other points to that eityi would be the rate of discount upon bills drawn by them: and as the money of the govern ment has no connection with the business of mer ehanta, its removal to. New Orleans, when required there, could not surely make other points, in the country either more or lessindebted to New York, or effect the indebtedness of that city to other points if she bad received more produce than was paid fur by her in goods. So long as the money of the goy ernmedt shall be kept separate from all business transactions of the mercantile and speculating class la, it cannot any more effect the exchanges of the country, than they would be affected by the remora/ from Pittsburgh to St. Louis or Philadelphia of a man who might have in his possession, and unem ployed, fity or sixty millions, instead of too millions. It will be print ed in handsome style, on film paper, of beautiful texture and will no doubt be esteemed as a treasure by hundreds into whose bands it will fall. • The Snoke and the Woodpecker. We have noticed in many places, a /cry wicked and very unprofitable practice, viz: boys or men standing sentinel in orchards with a gun shooting woodpeckers. In any country, and particularly in this, where orchards generally are au poorly taken ca.e of, the woodpeckers arc of greatiadvantage in the way of killing insects and worms. It was once thought that these birds picked into the fruit tree for the purpose of getting the sap; if that was the case they could find trees in our woods of native growth, containing nap much more palata ble than can be found in our orchards. The fact is they hunt after and destroy much of the vermin that infest, and in very many cases kill, our most valuable fruit trees. When there are or chards very much infested with worms, the wood peckers in all probability cannot save it, but doubt less they have saved many an orchard by devouring the worms and insects before they beedrue numer ous. They are the open enemies of all noxious rep tiles. Not long ago we were riding by an 'orchard, and our attention was attracted by the incessant clatter of some two or three dozen of there sap suckers. We knew frost the nature of the birds that something unusual must be going on, and we hitched our horse and proceeded cautiously to the spot. On coming near we discovered a child, a little girl, asleep, we could hear other children at a distance at play. On getting still closer we saw the cause of the birds• uneasiness; there, within three feet of the innocent one, lay coiled up and striking at the birds as they pounced down upon him on every side, a large venomous serpent, we procured . a large stick, and unperceived got a stroke st hint, and following it up with others soon dispatched him. The child had been at play with the rest, and be coming wearied, had lain down and fallen aslee.. Power of Instinct. CARROLLTON, OHIO, APRIL 24. When all were lifted out with care, and laid down to her, she gathered one up with her paws into a roundish bulk, seized the gathered parts with her month, ascended the same tree she had previously gone up, and from its top again sailed off to another, and so .1,, until she had the young one safely deposited in a new home. She soon returned, and in like manner toes .way the other one to the same place. Two or three times there were threats of rows; and one follow, without provocation, struck Mr. Crevier in the mouth. People may ask : Where were the police officers We don't know. UNITED STATE, DIsT/tICT COORT.— Tile care of United States, vs. about a dozen Canal boatmen, wail taken tip on Friday, and occupied the time of the Court on Saturday, and the prospect is that the whole of this week may be taken up in the trials. The detendents have been indicted fur obstructing the U. S. Mail, on its way from Kittaning to Pitts burgh. The whore matte, appears to have grown oat of business rivalry on the canal. The prosecu tors arc the owners of one line, and the detndants are owners of another. The former carried the mail. Boats of both lines were nearing a lock, when the one (as is charged,) belonging to defend. ants, made a rush to get in first, thus preventing the mall boat from proceeding, in her usual time. The defence promised to &hew, that, notwithstand ing, the mail did arrive tw•o hours before the regular time. This is about all we gathered from the little we heard of the case. Pull Bearers Pall Bcarel s Mr. U. S. District Attorney Wylie, and Mr. M' Candlesa, appeared for United States, Mr. MStagraw• fur Defence. CA VC lIIT.--officets Hague and Fut yesterday made an arrest of a persOn who is strongly suspected of having committed divers olfences against the peace and dignity of the Commonwealth. His name is given as Daniel Wilson, and he rays he be longs tO Cincinnati. He has been in this city about four vi (mks, and a portion of the time boarded at the Exchange. The arrest yesterday wan made under three infor mat.ons bef, re Alderman Steele. The first was; Stealing money from the till of the steamer Ring gold, at our wharf, last Thursday. About e 2,50 wa■ taken in addition to a half dollar, which could readily be identified on account of the peculiar marks upon it. The second information was in re latioti to this piece. The third was made by officer Hague, who believes that Wilson in a fugitive from justice in Ohio, having been convicted in Cincinnati for stealing a watch. A very valuable purse was found upon him, which is supposed to have been stolen. If any person has bat one, they bad better call at the Independent Police Office, and see this one. METHODIST ConsEncrice.—The proceedings of Saturday were not very interesting, to any but the members, as the session was mostly taken up in reading reports of Committees in relation to the pe• cuniary affairs of the Church. The committee ap. pointed to report upon the expediency of revising the Hymn Book, reported affirmatively, which re port was with some amendment, adopted. We understand that Bishop Soule, one of the most distinguished divines of the M. E. Church, South, is in this city. We believe there are many southern clergymen now in attendance at the ses sion of the Conference. Arecrruca BARR Gone.—Our eitixena were thrown into an excitement on Saturday, by the news of the failure of Reed, the owner of the Erie Bank, and that consequently that institution had failed. But we caution people who hold the notes of the ..shor to beware ; they may be as good as ever, and this alarm may be a trick of the dealers. Nothing will bo lost, at all events, by holding on to the notes for a few days. —Since the above was written, we have received the Erie Observer, of Tuesday morning, which con tains the following; SIIIFEKSION OF THE ERIE BANK.-WO stop the press to say that the Erie Bank suspended payment to-day. We have neither time nor inclination for comment. To bill holders we would say, don't sacrifice at present. The Cashier assures us it has means, though just not now available, to redeem its Circulation dollar for dollar. Foutt Men Daowritn.—A melancholy affkir oc curred yesterday afternoon, at Dam No. I. A party of men were out in a skiff, and approaching rather too close to the fall, four were drowned. We heard that one was named McKee, and belonged to Birmingham. The bodice had not been found at 4 o'clock yesterday. "t Hudson, with his immense and beautiful pan orama of the Ohio and Mississippi Rivera, left yes terday, for Pittsburgh. We commend him and his to the Smokers.—Cin. Corn. We 'II attend to him, Greaser, and pay him with dimes and applause.
