Weekly ROVICNV or the Markets.
OFFICE OF THE POST,
FRWAT AIOILIIING, April 14, le4d.
Our commercial week has passed quite encourag
ingly : the signs ofpanic exhibited some days ago,
are happily vanishing. There appears to be more
confidence in the banking institutions of Ohio,
though still there who receive large - heaps daily, are
careful not to lot them be in their safes over night.
The amount of business transacted in the city during
the week, has been tremendous. Every merchant
has been crowded with orders—many of which they
foune grrat difficulty in filling. The transactions
have been confined to the regular trade ; we notic e
but little speculation in the fluctuating articles.—
Goods are sent efFfreely to the "regular four months
customers," which indicates a great degree of con
fidence in the future condition of the western trade.
The rivers have been in fine order, and the pros
pect of a continuance of high water is good enough.
We have heard no croaking among steam boat men,
though the competition is very brick. There ap
pears to he an abundance of Freight in the city ;
width goes off at fair prices.
The weather has been warm and pleasant ; one
good shower was all that came upon us.
The roads are now in good order, but we have
not seen the expected arrivals of country produce
which were to cheapen the market. The farmers
doubtless have more profitable work on hands than
coming to town with little loads of stuff. We no
tice no decline in pried' of country produce ofim.
portance, and the supply in market as not great.
The effects of the opening of the Pennsylvania
and Ohio canal, have bon felt. We observe Cheese,
Ashes, and other articles of Western Reserve Pro
duce on the wharf, but not in sufficient quantities
to effect any change in the market.
From the Western states enormous lots of Bacon,
Bulk Pork, Lard, Skins and other articles, are com
ing in. From the South, Cotton, Hemp, Sugar,
Molasses, Rice, Tobacco, &c. are beeped
upon our market.
In prices we are not aware of any very import
ant change; we quote in the report below the ['w
ent rates.
The Canal business may he learned from the fol
lowing statement 1—

At the Allegheny wharf the greatest activity pre
vails. The wharf is covered with Pig Metal, Lem_

of Pittsburgh manufactures, Groceries, &c.

Iliti EY MATTERS.--Money begms to come in
pretty freely from the country ; which, in addition
to the business of the reason, ii facilitated by the
juniors afloat in regard to " currency." These sus
picions tend to swell the accounts with our Broker.,
and re`duce the value of Western bank notes. In
Cincinnati, there are stories in circulation prejudi
cial to the Norwalk and Sandusky banks, but from
all the information we have been able to obtain,
they are destitute of any tangible foundation. Our
merchants here, who are in correspondence with
those points, declare that the rumors have been oc.
visioned by designing persons, in order to bay up
the notes at a depreciation. If so, they have gUe.
ceedod in their object. Eschange on both East end
Wont, is without any variation from our last quota
tions. Eastern funds, though not plenty, are be
coming mote abundant; the selling rate is g per
cent. premium. The Brokers are at present buying
currency at 2.421 per cent. Tha is altogether owing
to the demand for, and the difficulty in obtaining
specie fondle,— to meet obligations is bank. In a
few days, it is thought, the rates of discount will be
the same as formerly, and therefore we have thought
it advisable to omit our table for the present.
Flour—The receipts during the week have been eon.
siderable, and the demand has been quite good. There
has been some finetuation in prices, but we now find
prices ranging about as they did last week. Some lots
have been bought for shipment—but the greater portion
of the Flour bought has been for home consumption;
We can get no reliable information as to the future condi
tion of the market. as the moat intelligent dealers differ
in opinion; some predict an advance, while others assert
that there must be a decline. We are tempted to regard
the latter class as right--for we cannot see what there is
to keep up the price, while there is so much decline in
other articles of food. There appears to be plenty of
Flour in the country, which will be crowded upon the mar.
ket soon. Much, however, is of inferior quality. The re.
ceipts yesterday were light, and there appeared to be a
fair demand. We noticed several sales on wharf at the
following rates: e. 1.50. 4.0024.62 e. We consider: 84,56
the average quotation for yesterday's transactions, From
store *4,6261,75 were the hgures, at which we noticed
sales.
Sugar—We hare but little to remark in relation to
Sugar. It seems to maintain its price. notwithstanding
the great supply on hands. and the forced sale. We
quote at .503.1 e, in ktbds. fur Prime New Orleans, on time.
—Large lots are taken freely at fi7Vit29e.
The sales to the country are brink. Market well supplied,
and demand good. We notice that an inferior artieleli
in market. We do not quote sales of any but Ninth.'
C heeae—Several small lota have arrived, and sales
already %toted at 70Se. Goshen sells at Plefle.
