Knead 'of a Letter from Col. Wynkeop,
" I tell you, sir, there is a spirit abroad among the good
Americans engaged in this war, which, will not sleep
during futurity—a spirit which awaits bin their return, to
thunder down upon the mouthing, scribbling sycophants
of a most unjust party, the full measure ,of an honest in
dignation. It is the same that brooded - osier our laud lu

Who itt'76 succored the British, and those" who in '47 gave
arguments and sympathy to- the Mexicans! This kind of
language, from a. mat who came intd this campaign se
lPhrg in policy, may sound strange to .yOu., but I haves
gain. and again been compelled to !Wen to and to suffer
that, which would have ohanged the diSposition and alien
ated the affection of the most distinguished partisan. Even
now, I do not object to the leading dud Main principles of
my old party, so much as to curse turd deprecate the
tone of its acknowledged leaders and supporters. If
there is any reason which will prevent General Scott
from effecting an honorable peace.. commanding. as he
does, the whole city of the Aztecs, with his powerful bat
teries it is the SPIRIT OF TREASON which I unhesita
tingly say is promulged by the lending Whig journals at
home. In a sortie upon solhe ladrones of Jalapa, a short
time since; I pbsseseed Myself tif dl the late newspapers
published to that plime.and upon exnthining them. I fold
that, inthat plaCe, the same as in Mexico, the strong
est arg, unients publis hed against our army are selections
from WHRI PAPERS OF THE UNITED STATES."
Ertract of a Letter from Norton McGiffin, of Washington
County.
Winebiddle and myself were detached from the mat
of the company, and had a hard time of it. We had twen
ty of them upon us at one time—killed six of them, and
the rest left us. Winebiddle was wounded slightly in the
side. I was knocked over, but not hurt .badly.. Our es
cape was miraculous. The bodies of dee slam or rather
butchered, were found that night and brought in. They
were most horribly mutilated (agreeably to the instruc
tions of TOM CORWIN) by the humane Mexicans; so
much so, that it seas difficult to recognize, in their.mutila
ted forms, our former comrades. who so lately bloomed in
the full vigor of health. Poor Crutzleman was most hoe•
ribly disfigured; and, in fact, they all bbre the most shame
ful marks of violence from the merciless enemy. They
have died in a GOOD CAUSE. fighting , for their COUN

country, as to pamper thateruti—may Inez say fatal—op

nay destroy, every effort of the Administration, to prose
cute the war to a spe'edy termination—will cripple every
energy of the government, and compel-us towage the war
ad ittfinitunz or conclude a dishonorable peace. But for
this TREASONABLE spirit of opposition, we had been
home, ere this, and our stay here ran only be determined
by the duration of that opposition."

Saturday, at the new Court House, Stith a " Project;"
and regaled with an address, illustrative and ex
planatory thereof, by that accomplished orator and,
philanthrophic philanthruphist, the Rev. Dr. Alex
ander Stevenson. His excessis e modesty, or some
thing else; has prevented him from even hinting the .
nature and purpose of this " Project ;” and I beg
leave to supply the omission: u,nl thus pa, e the
way for an attendance commensurate with the im
portance of the to be proposed enterpri:e, by stating ,
the report of madame humor, 111'v - elution thereto.
It is well known, of it ought to he well known, by
this time, that the learned DOCUir has been in cor
respondence, recently, by meami;of the sub marine
Telegraph, with he savant' of the " British Scien
tific Association ; and it is said, or " they say," that
his "Project" embraces a Scientific.lustitute, on
a magnificent scale, in which, lectures, with expeti
ments, will be delivered, on every branch of
knoWn and unknown, past, present, and to come--
particularly, Herbal Medicine, and Fruit. selling, of
which, he is an'eminent and successful practitioner.
It is his intention, in expatiating on these scien
ces, to avail himself extensively of his recent for
eign scientific correspondence, which has opened
to him vast sources of information, and has particu
larly enlightened him in relation to Fruit-selling, by
giving him an insight into the customs and practice
of that time-honored fraternity, equally ancient
with the " Inns of Court," the "Honorable Society
of Fruiterers" of Convent Garden , and St. Giles in
London. And to obtain more light on this favorite
branch of practical science, than can be had by cor
respondence, he is prepared to tiger his services in
seeking information from the fountain head; and
will be quite willing, provided' his expenses are
paid, and the consent of his numbrons and attached
congregation can be obtained, to' undertake a voy
age across the ocean, and visit in person the country
of that distinguished British patriot, who bath given.
a name to our smoky city. This flt, tberal and disin.:
wrested offerovill doubtless be resion led to prompt
ly and enthusiastically by his blends and f.llovv
citizens, of all denominations.
It is understood that it is nut the. intention of the
Rev. Doctor, at the meeting on Saturday, to present
his.' Project" in detail ; but only the outlines. The
details are to be devolved on a Committee to be ap
pointed at the meeting, who after' rt
partaking of a
oyster supper, to preserve the equilibrium between
the stomach and the brain, while the letter if . ; at
work, will proceed to a minute investigation of all
the principles involved, and may be expected to re
port some two weeks after, wl.en both oysters and
.. Project" are fully digested. _
The object of this communication, is to direct
public, attention to the " Project," and ensdre als
large an attendance as possible at the meeting.
The Chair will be taken by the Rev projector at the
hour mentioned in the advertisement; and will be
opeped by singing an Ode, expressly prepared for
the occasion by a ci-dovant projector, who has been
unsuccessful in another and cognate project, which
will partake of the nature of a Jeremiad or lamen
tation. The Ode will be sung by the Doctor, who
will also perform all the other exercises—excepting
banding around the hat for the collection, which
will be done by an associate philosopher and phi
lanthrophist.'

The Vice Presidency—Gen. Waltman.
For the Morning You.
Pennsylvania, with a singular degreee of Unanimi
ty, has presented to the people of the Union, the
claims of the Hon. Jeans BUCHANAN to the presi
dency. She has spoken in terms not to be misun
damned, in favor of her great statesman, and 'her
voice will be listened to, and doubtless obeyed, by
the Democratic National Contention.
As yet, but little has been said in Pennsylvania,
relative to the Vice Presidency. By a few the name
of General John A. Quitman has been -mentioted
in connection with this elevated position. A brief
glance at his life will show that ho is deserving of
all honor. Born in the State of New York, lie rais
ed himself from obscurity to affluence, and by tal
ent and application obtained an enviable reputation
in the profession be embraced—that of the law.
After his admistion to the Bar of Philadelphia. ho
moved to Mississippi, where he had not resided
long, before he was chosen State Chancellor. The
duties of this office, he discharged with distinguished
ability-, and as an able lawyer and profound jurist,
he stood confe eerily without a rival in the State of
his adoption. The war with Mexico found in him
a powerful advocate of the interests and honor of
his country, and he evinced his patriotism by at once
taking the fieldi Bewas appointed a Brigadier Gen
eral by the President of the United States. In the
battle of Monterey he was an active participant,
where he highly distinguished himself, and at the
bombardment of Vera Crux, displayed great courage
and science, thus materially aiding in the reductioe
of this second Gibraltar. At this time h s superior
military acquirements were still further noticed by
the Adminis ration, and Quitman was promoted to
the rank of Major General. kis scarcely neeessal y
to say, that, in the sanguinary battles fought in the
valley of Mexico, he displayed the same dauntless
courage and military knowledge exhibited on other
Important occasions. It was here lie bad command
Of the Second Pennsylvania Regiment---ofwhich he
speaks in terms of high commendation--and by les
' kindness and soldierly bearing attached every man
to his person. When the Mexican capital fell, be
fore the skill and proWess bf American arms, Gene
ral Quitman was appointed civil and unhurt Gov
ernor of the City of Mexico. At this time all was
confusion worse confounded," but under his pro.
dent and judicious government, law and order was
established, and the rights of every man was rccog. I
named and respected.
General Quit man has ever been a firm and con- I
sistent democrat. In early youth, he became at :
_ _
tached to the pronciples taught by Jefferson ; and
his whole life has been a beautiful exemplification
of their truth. We look upon him as one of the ;
jewels of our country, and would rejoice to see ad•'
diuonal honors paid htm. The names of Buchanan;
and Quitman, would be more than a tower of:
strength. They would unite the North and South ;:'
arouse the utmost enthusiasm throughout the entire
country; and secure their triumphant election.
We think their nomination by the Democratic Na.:
Urinal Convention, would be hailed with pleasiii-e,
by thegrent party of which they are distinguished?
members; and would be justified by the voice of
reason and the dictates of good policy.

THE LATE DEATH BY CHLOILOYORH.—We corvers•

death of Mn.s Simmons. It has been asserted that
she was in ill health, and that she could not have

We do not in this article intend to reflect any blame
upon Dr. Meredith. We presume he gave it, as he
had given it to others, and es other physicians and
dentists had administered it.
