Sale of 50 doii-n ar 22c. Philadelphia, Feb. 5. In .relation to the counterfeit gold coins, whiuh hare been before'described, the following letter was written to the New Orleans Mint by the Director of - the Philadelphia Mini. The half-eagle referred to bore no Oiiot*mark: I Must of the United States, Philadelphia, Oct. 21, 1547. Sir—The counterfeit half-eagle which yo"b liave sent I»roe is a. very remarkable and very dangerous imitation of the true coin. It is, a curious coinci dence, that while yon were examining the counter feit half-eagle, we had onr attention engaged by a ( quarter-eagle, dated 1843, equally well imitated, and.composcd in Ihe same manner. This, however, bears the 0., which marks it as an imitation of the New Orleans coinage. I teod you a part of it en closed for your examination, bat beg that you will { return-it to me. There are dies missing of those sent to-you from here, as is evidenced by your re ports; nor are any missing here; so that the origi nal dies cannot have been used by the counterfeiters We must suppose, either that the counterfeiters have the services of a most skilful engraver, or that they have possessed themselves of a dangerous process, recently discovered in England, for making very perfect dies of cast iron, which are fac similet of the original medal or coin. f Very respectfully your faithful servxbt, R. M. Patterson, Director. The amount of Treasury notes outstanding on the let last, wae $13,651,019. The amount outstanding on. the Ist January was $14,937, 331. /There was a very heavy business on Thursday in the stock market, and prices of almost every de scription went up floatingly. Government loans, of 1667, rose 1, which, deducting the month’s interest ■ do# on them, bringstbe government credit within 4 per cent, of par. The money market Is easier, and the whole tone of feeling in stock circles much im proved. / •m-' , i . . d, .r' _ :. , t.: . >'i £■■* ?-H' NESSIMI Baltikoue, February 4. Tbtf money market still continues stringent, and the Banks discount with great caution. A large amoontof good paper, which under other circum stances would receive favorable attention, is being thrown out. Those, therefore, who, though good, having money to raise fur immediate payments, find considerable difficulty. To this present tightness of monetary affairs, may be attributed the cause of the unusually wide differcrce made between cash and limeaaies, especially in breadstuffs. The recent foreign news per the Acadia, has had an unfavora ble effect: Many were holding baeh for this intelli gence, in anticipation of higher prices, but they have suffered disappointment. As a general thing, all who have stored produce, expecting advanced -rates, feel able to meet contingencies, and are there * fore safojbot the prospects for shipmentarerbeesming less favorable, and we should net be surprised if lower prices than those now ruling, would havelto J»e. taken. In any emergency, our prospects or a /. wholesome'trade to come are good. A comparative statement of the imports of foreign ana- colonial Breadstuff's at Liverpool, for three years, exhibits striking results as to the in crease in that time ; and it is probable that the Flour, of which last year 2,330,327 bbls. were im ported, against 172,000 in 1845, is chiefly from this country. The circular of Robert Procter computes Re stock of:Breadstuffs at Liverpool, at the close of .1847, at 50,000 qrs.l of wheat, 100,000 bbls. flour, 100,000 qrs. of Indian Corn, and 120,000 bbls. of Indian meal. - ; ; Money Mattebs.— The New York Tribune of Thursday says, that the private letters by the steam er speak generally in; hopefUl tones of the condition ;of financial affairs. Money was abundant. Comtakative Cost or Coal and Wood, fo* Steamboats. —Capt. Carlisle, of the Marshal Ney, took in, at Cannelton, Perry county, la., 32,000 bushels-of coal at 7 cents, per bushel;— every 14 bushelsof which equalled one cord of .wood in pro ducing steam, thus saving the. difference between the price of 14 bushels of coal, 98 cents, and a cord of yrood at $3,50* to s3—the price now asked on the SL Louit Or/fan, , , .
