The war between Mexico and the United States, ■s now attracting ft. at&ntion of the world, and Wh,le some American Statesmen, more talent than truth, end more partizanship than pa triotism, “ render aid and comfortito the enemy ” by pronouncing it unconstitutional and unjust, it j may not be improper to inquire v> bat a Jaj-ge por tion of the Mexican people think; pt thismatter. The writer of this letterlhas conversed with an intelligent gentleman recently returned from Mex ico, where he resided for sixteen years, from whom he obtained some valuible information. The in habitants, he said, of thatfeountryj ire divided into two great factions—the che a monarchical and the other a republican party: The object of the for mer being to establish a kingly government, while the latter ardently desires to see t'he great piinci- Pie. of human liberty prevail throughout the land. The repub.ican party, thotlgh in point of number, far the larger of the two; „ composed of men of «ry little property, and who are hot eve,, permit £d to own tire arm,, they bav* consequently been unable thus far to atcomplisiy any thiog cal t mated to better their condition. .But they look upon the present war with intend interest. To them it is lull of hope anil promise? They believe that the bravery and prowess of America arm. will eventually obtain for them, that which they never themselves could Wring from ilheir tyrants— a free government—and iso fully are they impres sed with this conviction, that they will never agree to a treaty of peace, until they are sscure in the enjoyment of this great and inestimable right— Their great desire is to come underthe protection of American laws, oriadopta constitution similar to outs. It i, idle then, 'and absurd, for some of our politicians to taik about “the persecuted Mex ican and hia outraged country.” ;The great ma jority of the Mexican people ephshfer us their benefactors, and Ipbk uppn us as their deliverers from worse than Egyptian bondage.! Every victo ry achieved by our galiaot army loosen, ibeir j chains and improve, their condition. Elsewhere allii, - confusion j “' or “ < ' on, oo to-day pre serving bis life by a precipitate flight. It is evident, then, that the Mexiian people re quire a free government, ahd that they are willing and anxious 10 receive it. is our duty, as a great and magnanimous people,>to extend to them a helping hand, and place them in posses sionof all the rights and ; we enjoy— Such, it is believed, would be the o&y proper and! honorable course for the United Stiles to pursue— a couise that would be justified by (he dictjtes o L reason, the claims ol humanity, and the light of freedom. . ‘V. Mexico, however, would not he the only party that would be benefitted by this change. The commercial advantage, Ihkl would be derived by the American Republic would bej immense. A new market would immediately he Opened for our products, and it is supposed that Mexico would annually purchase trom us' gooJ s the va]ue q( twenty million, of dollars, fhi, trade, which is very considerable, would he comtafitly increasing *nd should, of itself induce our government to’ take the step which this letter advocates. The most influential and able member, of the Democratic party, with Whom I have converged, are of thi Opinion that the candidate should be taken from iPenn.vlvania j and that the best man for that high: and respon.i ble office is the distinguished Secretary of State Jsxxs Bccuaxax. Men who have heretofore laughed, scoffed and sneered at Mesi merism and Mesmerises, now give dp opposition and say that there must be something in them, tho all :s .unaccountable to them. So is it to Mr. Spencer himself—he cannot explain the laws of attraction and repulsion, by which he performs l what some deem miraculous. But still the fact that such powers exist, that such laws have been 1 instituted by the Creator of all, cannot be denied by those who have eyes to see and ears to hear, and common understandings. To suppose for one moment that the number of persons Who have been Controlled by Mr. S. have been employed to deceive and humbug their fellow citizens, is too preposterous, and the thought is not enteitaineii *>y any, to far as we know, who have visited Philo o Hall during the paat week. On Friday evening Mr S. was very successful! He found good subjects among the number whom he magnetized: Mr. May, a young man named Culhbert, and a very intelligent and honest lad named Wilson. Mr. Tevis was called -upon the stage towards the close of the evening The most remarkable experiment of the evening was the loss of persons! identity ; that is, Tevis, the sailor, was made to consider himself the boy Wilson; «nd little Wilson was made to think himself the sailor, Tevis. The hallucination lasted for half an hour; and not one in the audience, we believe, doubt the honesty of the experiment. Mr. Spencers Lectures will continue during the present week, should the audiences justify. At the close, a private class will bs formed, to the members of whichdie will impart all the informa tion on the subject, which it is possible lor him to impart. Those who wish to join may leave their names with Mr. S.at the Exchange, at our office, or at the door of the Hall ’ Sixth Wahd Lectcrss.— On account of the muddy it recta, and Tailing snow, on Friday even ing, the audience in the Sixth Ward Public School House was not as Urge as it should have been ; yet there was a respectable number of intelligent people, and many small boys and girls, present Mr. Allen did not deliver the Lecture he had pre pared lor the occasion, on account of bis disap. poiniment in the audience. He, however, made a very popular address, on the subject of Educa. lion, the Schools, See., which pleased all who!were present; and the young folks were very much in terested in the familiar and popular stvle of the speaker We think some of the old citizens of the Ward, who happened to be present, got a few ncwulra, on of training childreo.- We never hrar.t a Lecture, so short and simple, that gave so much instruction, and carried such a force of argument with it. All the positions were well illustrated. We regret that the Hall ivas not crowded with the citizens of the Sixth Ward; so that .Mr A. might have felt encouraged in going fully into the •object; and offering the st.riling and truthful views, which are propagated by toe School of Re formers to which he belongs. The next Lecture will be by Dr. Muller. Th* Puiio Co.kxittcs—Mcsnxaisx. We have been frequently asked to inquire whether the old Philo Committee, appointed “a long time ego’ to investigate the subject of Mesmerism, intend malting their report after the departure of Mr, Spen cer. We are anxious to sec it; for we know that the gentlemen who were intrusted with the ques tion are capable of doing ample juitice. It must I come this time. 03-A.
