N accordance with the provisions of an act of

the General Assembly of the State of Pennsyl va
ilea, providing for the incorporation of the City of
' Pittsburgh, .and of the Sudplements to said Am,
OJABRIEL ADAMS, Mayor of said City, du issue
this, my Proclamation, declaring that on the
SECOND TUESDAY thanuary, A. D., IS4S, bei np
the ilth lay of that month, "the freemen of eacl
ward of said City," qualified to vote for members
of the House of Representatives of this Common
wealth, will meet together at the several places fei
holding elections in their respective wards, and
elect by ballot, a citizen of the said City, qualified
to be elected a member of the House of Represen
tatives of this Commonwealth, to be Mayor of said
City.
And that on the same day, is conformity to the
before recited authorities, and also, to an ordinance
of Councils, districting said city, passed the 14)th
day of November, A. D., 1847, the citizens of the
First ward will elect by ballot THREE persons: of
the Sword ward THREE: the Third ward Six: the
Fourth ward THREE: the Fifth ward Severn the
'Sixth ward THREE: the Serenth ward Two: the
Eighth ward Two: and tee Ninth ward ONE,—
each of whoria shall he qualified to serve as a meat
, ber of the, House ofliepresentatives of thisro moon
wealth, to ne members of the Common Council.

During the .week there has been considerable
uctivity in Pittsburgh manufactured articles.--
Itisny lures .orders hive been filled, and the demand
s still good; but there are no changes in prices.
In Groceries there have been some transactions;
also in country produ'e. Altogether, the business
has been good for the season. The weather has
been much of the time very,pleasant, and fasora-
bie to
outdoor transactions. The rivers are in
excellent order; and steamers arrive and depart
well freighted. On • the wharf there has been
, quite a stir—it looks spring like. We noticed
several boats covered with Pittsburgh Molasses
barrels, which will come back in March filled.
..e Air the rates of discount, we refer to our tabkl
which has.been carefully corrected by Messrs.
Kramer& itahm. The failures of the Eastern
Banks, and the discredit thrown upon money in
this State, seem to have no effect, there being but
Ye* of their.notes in out market. Confidence in
Pennsylvania - and western banks generally is good.
ASHES—Very fey. , sales, and no variation in
prices. We quote as follows, which may be 4
pended upon by dealerk as being the correct
figures : Pots and Score/zings, 5a51; Pearls, 7i
asked, if offered; Sufurams, sales at 7}.
RICE--Not much in market. A few transac

BUTTER—The demand is falling off; but the
price is still up, in consequence of the scarcity of

FLOUR—Not much doing ; Arrivals small, and
there appearsno change in frices. Yesterday a
small lot was taken from river at $4,90; a few,
wagon loads at 14,0V1,93; from store we still I
