The Connellsville Railroad charter, which cost
T'ittibtirgh so much money and diplomacy ;-incl
over Whfch there' once was such au effervescence
of publirjoy l 7 was recently considered of as little
value as a continental shinplaster, by nearly all
the largestockholders ; Intl with great unanimity
they resolved to tut the acquaintance of Baltimore'
nnd to heat President Ikl'i..ane by running away
Horn him. This unanimity was only with the
lire* and Wealthy stockholders. The democracy
of numbers, the ; small shareholders, with: 'Hajar
Latimer at theirliead. are courageously battling
;for the retention of the charter; declaring that it
xili r one day, be of inctdculable value to Pitts.
burgh; Ad they seem ftilly impressed with the
kelitt,' that posterity will' bless them for what
some people consider their dogged obstinacy, and
their high-hatded, illegal, ; unwarrantable, impos
ture. The old Board, with Col, Robinson at its
head, look on the .blejor7sl3onni as a mere cabal;
ankonthe other hard, the'•Lsrimer Board" hold
the'old Boan:i as enemies to the• true interests of
Pittsburgh. !The Lorimer Board are not only
I' active in iolieiting pUblic favor; but to show their
eariscshiesi and deteiminaiion, have gone to work
'andsurie.yedaeveral miles of the road, and will
shiirtly have Men laying the rails upon it. Be.

important one; and u hen thepeople of the county

reason, the Collector of ;the port of Sandusky
City. Ohio, with a statement of the shipments and
receipts at that port, during the:year ending on
else 30th of September. 1647 ; from which it ap
pears that the whole amount of merchandise sent
from that place, by steamboats and other vessels,
has been of the value of $3;438,540; and that
the value of goods received thete has been r e
147,261. The value of the new shipping there,
'during the time mentioned, has been $106,416.
A comparison of the repOrt fur the last, over
that of the former year, shows that the increased
exportation Of wheat alone has' amounted to near
ly 1,000,000 bushels. The great amount of
ports over exports is owing to the large amount of
produce sent away by other channels, chile the
imports are mainly received through Sandusky
city. The increase of railroad cotnmunication,
and other facilities, will no , doubt greatly aid in
making that a very eligible and extensive place
of business:

It is indeed time that Oid Waiforthcieming We

More active should the committee , men be. Not
a cent has yet been collected, as we have been in
formed, though the airi"rigements for - the duty.
were madiweeks ago. Btit those engaged must be
eieused, as they doubtless' moved in the matter
with all the dispatch Fusible. Our citizens have
only td be solicited, in order to succeed in raising
the - required fund. The demands will not be heir),
on each one; and no one IA ho is able, should object
to making small Contribution. _
Tui Naw" ENGLAND Sueria.—All the sons
and daughters of the "land of steady habits,"
and ttli descendents from the Pilgrim.Futhers, now
in this city,- are expected to be social t o
. night, and
join in corinnenorating - one of those. glorious
events, vrbich has .givers to Freedom an abiding
homi, and to the oppressed
,of every clime a rest
ing place. We doubt not that the , affair will be
more than pleasant—really delightful. The snow
now lying *round , us, on_the high hills' of the Al.
legheny and Monongahela, may well remind them
of the bleak hills of New England at this season
of the year.
DZATII 07 A Maxaza or Cart NAILOICITON.
, rarir.—William Rice, a soldier belonging , to
the second Regiment, a citizen of Philadelphia,
died on Sunday evening last, on board the steamer
Hibernia. N0..2., while on his way to - this city.—
He was returning home, having been discharged on
account of bad health. His rematni were given
into the care of 'an 'old friend and acquaintance in
this city, Mr. S. Eakeris, who yesterday left for
Philadelphia With them.
Toe Vvirrsti.—We were anxious to notice Mrs .
Swisshelm's new paper; but as the lady did not
deem us worthy of a 'specimen of her sheet, we
Can not say what it is like from our own know
ledge. The city press generally speak favorably
of the first number; and from our knowledge of
the energy of the editress, and the taste of a large
portion of the people; we doubt not the %lifter will
be entirely successful. •
clj.Some of our.cotemixiraties are urgingeorne
reforms in the Post Office. . No complaint it made
uto the manner-in which the present function
aries perform their arduous duties, More clerics
are required; and more pay to those now em
ployed.
Lauciny.—A young man named Al Enight, was
committed by Mayor Adams yesterday, on infn
motion of the proprietor* of the Theatre Itecear,
who charged him .with the larceny offline dollen.

richly merited. • Rare the editors been reading his

the object of the philarithropic authOr..
ti Many of the Allegheny city Whigs art
making huge effort* to induce Mr. Alexander to
run as an independent candidate for Mayor. Thely
assert that foul play was resorted to at the prun3ry
meetings. Among them be it.
ca Pittsburgh -and St Louis are now conne:ted
by the Telegraph Wife ! The longest line in the
world is through our city, riz: From Washington
city to St. Louis, a distance of about one thousand
miles. Think of such a ponderous document as
the President's Message travelling such a distance
in almost no time!
ozrThere is some talk of reviving the,Coloni
iation movemetns that once caused some talk in
this city. An agent is'expected here shortly, who
will lecture on the present stateof the new Repub
lic of Liberia; and give much valuable 'informs
tion in reference to what has been dune, asid is now
doing in the south, with a=view• to the arneliors
tion of the condition or the blacks.
a:7-We understand that a mere accident pre_
vented Mr. Job G. Patterson from receiving , the
Whig nomination for Mayor. Us was prepared
with a speech for the War Meeting, and had he
been.present, he would have surely indulged in
the affair, and thus gained a name with hit corn
petittirs: " Upon What a thread does hang our
destinies."
