Latest from Mexico!
By the arrival of the steamer James L. Day, at
New Orleans, on the 23d, from Vera Cruz, whence
she sailed on the 191 h, we have received no later
intelligence from the city of Mexico direct.
Santa Anna was at Puebla on the :nth of Sep

stating, that be had taken possession of (Le City
of Mexico , with SOOO men ; and requesting him
to immediately evacuate that post; threatening, as
usual, that tf he refused. he would storm his posi.
don. Cvi. Childs replied that he was fully satisfied
he should be able to maintain his position; and,
having been honored with the dt,t of guarding
that place, he would defend it to the last extrenn.
