The Election.—Our Prospects.
/sx the time draws near for our State election, we
And the Federal party—the friends of Irvin, and'
Patton, and Bankruptcy ; the men übo base sus
tained all the iniquitous measures, which came so
near bringing Pennsylv %Ma into a condition of
entire ruin ; and whose reckless course proved
them entirely incapable of conducting the affairs I
I 1 this great Commonwealth;—are resorting to all I
mannerof plans to try and deceive the voters, and;
induce a belief that they are disposed to be more
honest than they once were, and more faithful in'
• the discharge of the duties of the offices to which
they aspire. Knowing the utter want of cmifi
deuce in them by the great body of the People,
they are striving to direct nublic attention from
the true issues now before them—hoping thus to
secure a majority in their favor. But the People
of this State have not forgotten the shameful ex• ;
travagance of a Ritner and Stevens administration.:
They hare not forgotten the time when, under
Federal rule, some of the best citizens of the State
were dragged from their homes, at the call of a!
self constituted inquisition ; and the result of this
call is not forgotten. Nor have the people yet
forgotten when the leaders of Federalism—having
awakened the sense of •.ertgeance in 'an abused and
insulted constituency—deemed their places unsafe
in the legislative halls where they had been placed,
and sought safety in a back door flight. None of
these things are yet forgotten in Pennsylvania;
nor are the leaders in these acts, which led so near
to violence, 'among the uuremembered things.—
. They , and their associates and supporters, are well
known; and they are justly appreciated by the ;
people. The party which supported their claims!
to office, and sustained their iniquitous acts while;
in office, still sustains the same men; and as they
do not disavow and condemn their acts, it is fair,
to infer they commend them. Yet these are the
men—this is the..party, who are now asking the
people of this State to place them in power. This!
is the party, and these are the men, who come for.,
ward, and without disavowing or condemning any l
of these measures, so lull of es il, ask for tbe con.
fidence of the People ; and would again impose'
upon their generosity. Will they succeed ! This
is a question to be answered by every voter for
himself; ; and upon the answer depends much of
our prosperity, for years to come—if not forever. ;
But the people of Penns . ) Ivania are called on ,
to choose the officers who shall administer their af-
fairs ; and they will do so, we believe, in such al
manner, as to secure the best interests of their '
State. In coming to a conclusion on the sill ject,l
they cannot too closely investigate the political
acts of those who are presented for their suffrages;
—thity*innot too critically examine the tendency
of the doctrines advocated by the parties to which
these men belong. It; on the one hand, they find
- that a system of the most vile and infamous car
- eoption has been tolerated and enforced, under a

and a Stevens ;—if they find that the most
outrageous extravagance in the public expenditure
his been sanctioned, with a view to secure politi
cal ascendency ;—if they find that the influence of
publig,station, has been exerted merely to promotei
the private interests of the office holder ;---and that
all these breaches of the public confidence have
been sanctioned by the men of one party, the peo
ple are called on by a voice which they will not
disregard, to beware how they trust thnsemen, and
that party, with the reins of their political govern
-.meat—with the control of the public offices. Every
`corwideration of policy and duty is presented, to
._warn them of the danger of trusting these men.
• Having named some of the men who have for
. (cited all claims to the confidence of the people of
'Pennsylvania, we are led to ask—What party num
bers them among its members? It is the Federal
- party, which goes before the people with the once
'.glotiotni, but now degraded and disgraced name of,
:"Whigi—digraded, in having ,re,sorted to imposi- 1
tion'of every kind, in order to gain power; und
- diagraced by having violated all their pledges, to
~ -the-people, made before they obtained office. To
;lib - party belong JAMES lams, now a candidate
for Povernor, and Jos Era W. P.s.r.rorr, a candidate
for that offif.s of Canal Commissioner. Both these
`Men belong to, and are cherished by, that party

p3-The editor of the Gazette says—"lt is diffi
cult, we know, for a proud man to confess either his
ignorance or his calumny:" and he therefore contin
ues to assail the Vice President—charging him
with deception, subserviem?y, and every thing that
is degrading. We do not believe him to be igno
rant, in relation to most matters about which he
writes; and therefere are ,compelled to believe that
he is only performing a part required of him, by
those to whom he looks for support. This is truly
a miserable position in which to be placed; and it
must be especially so to one who possesses so high
a sense of magnanimity, such refined ideas of pro
priety, and so exalted a spirit of piety, as seems to
be possessed by him. But from the extensive know-!
ledge which he seems to have of the Sacred Scrip-I
tures, we have no doubt he could quote a score of
passages, to prove that this is his iltey. It is said
" the devil can quote Scripture to suit his purposes;"
and, if this be true, (we ask with deference to his
piety,) why may not the editor of the Gazette do,
the same Notwithstanding, it would seem to us,
that a man is occupying a most unenviable situa
tion, when he is compelled to try and "make the
worse appear the better reason." For our part
we disc aid all such morality as w ill lead a man to
adhere to an untruth, even though it may have
been stated in ignorance. We may come to con
clusions from false premises; we may be ignorant,
at times, of matters of fact; but we wall not persist
in error, nor will we misstate fact; but will avow
our ignorance when satisfied of at; and tell the
truth without fear, sod without reservation.
