confidently cherished, that the 'United States Re

dignified, and perfectly independent journal. It will

i Exer.noi..4lnary Letter
TILE Rev. J. O. _Gilbert; a 'Methodist Episcopal '
Preacher, writes to Dr, Jayne—Morristown,
April .TI, 1847. Dear girl never but once used
your medicines; it Was'as follows: was at our
country seat; and retired to bed about eleven o'clock,
in good health, and fell asleep, but was soon awak
ened by extreme pain in tine hand and arm. I suc
ceeded in keeping my bed till about four o'clock.
Mien I arose I found my hand badly swollen, or in
a high state of inflammation.' A small black spot on
the back of my hand, about the size of a five cent
piece. It soon rutted and came out to the bone.
When I arose the pain was very severe, running into
my head and over the whole system. By twelve o'-
clock my head and time were badly swollen. The
glands of my throat swelled very much, and by this
time every tooth in my head wps more or lees loose;
two thirds of the skin of my mouth and lips peeled
off; my sight quite elected; no. physi9ian near.
I d my friendimo take me home, (fifteen miles)
but they were ficirftil I could not stanc ity wheii T.
F. Davenport, who kept the public house, requested
me to go to his house. Chills, faintness and Hipknes
was constantly increasing upon me; I had become
almosqnsensible. As I tacked his house, his moth
er, alarmed at day appearance, met me at the stove
with a spoonful of JAYNE'S ALTERATIVE, and
repeated the dose two or three times in the course
of an hour, in which time the faintness, sickness and
chills had principally left—a free 'Perspiration was
on the surface end the inflammation vastly abating.
The third day I was able to ride home. The Rev.
Dr. Dlympurn imfertned me the 'attack was one of
the severhst kited iieMalignant Erysipelas, and that
'he use of your ALTERATIVE was the means of saving
my life. 'Respectfully yours, &c.
