ae :) , We saw .several street beggars yesterday—
more than we haVeseen in any one day for some
time. It is enough to make kpe sick with melons
vholy to witness some cases of destitution that are
exhibited on the streets and in alleys and courts.
There can Le no practicable remedy proposed to
prevent misfortune ; so that we do not expect to
see the time when there shall be no beggars.
We saw yesterday a mother, with three children,
asking alms in oifi•of the public places of the city .

The Tariff—Prices of Produce.
The Federal presses, as well in this city as else
,-:where, have been ClTAt'ing over a disc very which
they:have made in relation to the Dethocrats gen
-!erallY. They have found out that we, among oth
ers, have asserted the belief, that the Tariff of I SlO,
would lead to an increase in the price of the agri
cultural Producte of the country; and that those
produCts are now much lower in price than they
: were three months ago. Well, the discovery is
mud!: .more correct than many of their develop
mental and is therefore deserving of some atten
tion. They seem to wish to be enlightened upon
the present state of affairs in relation to our agri
cultural products; and we will endeavor to give
thetii the rie'cessary information : assuming that
They are, at the same time, most of them, as well
-4 'ir4fertned of the facts as we are ourselves.
We have not, at any time. however, asserte•_t
that the Tariff was the sole muse of the great rise
which took place in our products ; nor do we think
,--}hat any editor of a Democratic paper has taken
this ground. We have considered a rise in the
price of those articles as an incident proceding
from the late tariff law; and our belief still is, that
it will have a tendency to keep the pt ice of them
above the former prices. We base this belief upon
' very reasonable presumptions; and their truth will.
we think, be more clearly manifested in the con

that the unfortunate state of affairs in diffeicii;

As it is with individual dealers, so it is ,%itb:
nations—the greater the amount of our expends•

of articles they may want, that will be procured
krom us. The experience of every man proves
this to be true; and, also, that, the more facilities
we - offer to our neighbors.in the purchase of goods.
the greater will be the faciiities offered to us. for
obtaining what they may have;—reciprocal acts ~1

nation
We must rely. as a nation, in the main upon ouri
agriculture. • F l rorn this springs commerce ; and
with the tiko, carried to the extent which they may
be, we must continue to be the most powerful pen
- le . ,tificin the earth. These are the great bases of
national wealth, and national greatness ; and with•
out these, no nation can be truly great or power
ful. Manufactures naturally follow as an inciden
tal effect of extensive agricultural and commercial
Opeptions; but thesejhould ever be subordinate;
for, unlesiii they are sg; we cannot expect to retain
the; position of a free people;—it being a necessa
ry consequence of manufacturing, to concentrate
iri:e.aitti and influence : confine power in the hands
;of - the few ; and eventually lead to the overthrow
,ofall truly free and liberal institutions.
•We have not referred, in this rather discursive
article, immediately to the main question started
.by Our opponents—which is, why does not the tar-

New ,llampshire.--Federal CouBislency.
The Federal Mexican Whigs are in ecstasies at
the election or a couple of Abolition Vtligsi in the
State of New Hampshire. Now, let the lriader
mark the consistency of the federal press.:pan
alliance of federalists, abolitionists and spurious
democrats, (the adherents of the renegadellisle,)
the democratic candidates for Congress, in 'l.le Gist
and thir 1 districts, were defeated by a srrol ma
jority. This is not a " whig " victory, I'm' that
party. unaided by the factions above mentioned,
is very weak in the Granite State. If any Ching at
all, it is an abolition 'triumph ; and the le4ralists,
who are . glorying in it, should remember the fact.
But now, look at the other side of the 'picture.
The same federal editors who are singing p;mans at!
the abolition victory in New Hampshire, have 11
up to their mast heads, the name of ZiCIIAIII!
TAYLOR, one of the largest slave owners in the
Union, as a candidate for the Presidency This
fact shows conclusively that the federalists are
governed by no particular set of principles. They
hun g er for office, and to secure its emoluments
they will sacrifice principle, and abandon Nog tried
and faithful political friends.. Who would not
