SMILE Coxsumsas.—The pro - position of Col.

Works, waS referred tcl:6, Selelit Committee, by the

made. We understand that one other iVas preren

whole matter :may bei seriously and intelligently
considered; and a report made as speedily as pose

andour citizens should spare neither labor nor ex:
pense in introducing it into every building iii the
city, where coal is burned.
No IN.erzn.--ThelCorrimon CoUneil, by an in
definite postponementof the O T nlinance to construct
a second water basin, have struck a death blow to
'the hopes of many of the citizens of the. upper
warns. The old wards are too strong for the new;
and after the .riext election, under the apportion
ment law, they will have all the power of city gov
ernment in their own hands, and the new wards
may whistle for appropriations. The only hope
M. the new wards to have equal and exact justice
.done thern; is in joining with the Democracy, and
opposing Men who vote for the expenditure of
public money to improve the property of the
wealthy,-and Would deny the mechanic and labor
ing man in the new wards, a basin of hydrant wa

bors of the day.
Cratuvor.i.xcr.--4.1r. Editor: I went to the
Odeon to witness_ the experiments of Professor.
Loomis, and his daughter M.i.wruk, a confirmed
sciptic in' the science of human magnetism; and_
I left there with the conviction on my mind that
there are more things between heaven and earth
than iny_philosophy ever dreamt of. I am cer
tain of this fact, that Miss Martha, after being com
pletely blindfolded,. and that, to the satisfaction of,
as-Treat unbelievers as myself, and in no way in a
situation.to have anything telegraphed to her by
others, read distinctly whatever was placed over
her head, told the hour and minute of a watch after
the bands had been changed, and did other things
so unaccoutable tome, that I should like to see
persons investigate the subject whose'medical in
telligence would entitle them to the respect and
confidence of an mixed audience unfit to inVesti
--gable subjects of the kind. ASTI HUMIIVO.

STOP rain HAT!—We saw a tremendously large
broad-brimmed Hat going up Wood Street, on yes
terday. It had to get out of the way whenever it
met any body! Itiwas not very handsome ; and
yet all the ladies had to look at it.

this:evening. at the Hall of the Sons of America."
This order is rapidly increasing in the East, and
when its objects become generally known, will
doubtless flourish here.—Dispatch.
Cr The above is another specimen of guaranies ,
ism, a system which will some day bring good to
us 'all, But what about this new Order ? Can not
its ' , objects become generally known" now.
CnAdsens.—The fire in Pike Etree4 on Tuea
-day, was caused by crackers.
ME. HATIPTE.—Sir—The musical Soiree the e
ther evening at Professor Rohbock's, was too great
a treat to be passed over lightly, and as you were
not there to exercise your eloquence in describing
it, Pwill with your permission offer a few remars:s;
paiticularly; as I know that you are a lover of the
fine arts, and that you take every opportunity tot
encourage Them. It is a great pleasure to me to
witness the growing taste in this respect in Pitts
burgh, and that we are able to offer inducements toj
such a man as Professor TM:Mock to reside amdngst
us. Music aitli her sister Arts, Painting and
Poetry, forint the .hases of our intelligence, the
source of our intelleCtdal enjoyments, and without'
them we should regenerate to the lowest scale ofi
civilized life; to patronize them in their higher de-1
partments is-an evidence of .rowing taste.
The programthe offers a choice selection of mu
sic, commencing with the overture of Don Gio
vanni by Mozart far four hands, performedby Mr. R.
and his: pupil Mr. B This piece was executed with
great accuracy and fite effect Mr. B. afterwai'ds
played. another piece from Weber, which evinced
great::exe.cution, and indidates that he will be a
perfirmar of the first order and that he has fortu
nately fallen-into the right hands, to direct his
taste and mature his judgment.
The next piece was a Roue.° in Eb by Humniel
performed by Miss C.--; this piece though very
• difficult in several tespects, was ' very well perform
- ed; the beautifult,pearl line touch,so much admired;
ofliummel, was a.driiirably imitated; the coanten; I
ance of Mr. R.; proved his delight with his pupil's
performance, Ids not an easy matter to appreciate!
Hummel's music, it has to be studied with'great care! ,
before all its lieauties break upon you, like the
gems of the old masters, his compositions Will
when the more flashy styles of the day shall bare
become extinct.. I have heard Hurniol and Mos.
cheles, who perhaps assimulate more than any o
ther two of the great Artists of the time, and who
that has once heard them, will ever regret the
thrilling effect of their compositions:
“Untwisting all the chains that tie,
The hidden soul of Harmo67."
, Miss C. also sang two opera songs: One from I
Donizetti, mid the other from Wallace, to the de-'
light of the audience. This young lady proves that
Mr. R. is as misellent a teacher in vocal music as
he is in instrumentaL The Duett on the Piano, by
Miss cr and Mr. R was a most interesting piece
- by , Kalliwoder, and most charmingly executed.—
The difficulties of these variations are very great,
having been originally composed for the violin; but
were executed with an ease and brilliancy that
would have given credit to any concert saloon.—
Trio, by Hunter, for Piano, Violin and Violincello:
Mr. Hermann executed the Violin part with great
-sweetness, but ,how Mr. Rohbock managed to per
form the'other two parts on the Piano is a mys
tery not so easily, understood. It is certain, how
ever, that the effect was brilliant; and here Prof.
It gave us a spedimen of the wonderful command
he has over the Piano, in the masterly style in
which these parts were combine 'and executed.
-Miss M. sang tiro songs, the "Etind Boy" and the
..Midshiprrian's Farewell," very prettily, and proved
herielf a promising vocalist. The grand Fantasia
by Hertz t for tWO Pianos, was executed by Mr. R.
' and his pupil, Mr. E., with good effect. Mr. E.
appears to have trade great progress, under the ju
%ilicious management ofthe Professor.
The amusements of the evening were as varied
Its interesting. , The gentlemen of the Glee Club
gave us two or three glees, in their usual good
style, ;üblending their
,barmonious voices in one
,sweet concord of sounds,", and the intervals
were filled With the music of a hand, which Mr. R.
had , ingeniously. Placed in an upper apartment-and
which-broke upon the audience -with an electro
musical effect, like the music ofthe spheres.
Finally, to .say that each performed their res
pectiVe pasts well; and that the whole passed offi
in_ a style superior to any thing of the kind got up',
here before, is a truth that.a respectable audience.
Will readily attest; and to say that Prof. Rohbock
is a gentlemen aral'a musician of superior ability
is but a just tribilte of respect -to deserved' worth,
and long may•he.continue to receive that patron-
Age which his talents so justly merit. AMATEUR.
