They were still doing a little in the way of
in fortifying the city of Mexico, but a Speniard in.
g fo sme that all the obstructions they have elect
ed o far could be kicked over with the foot. The
4 city had been placed tinder martial law, anc the
dire t excesses were anticipated. The citizen,
had
all been called upon to take up arms in the corn
mor; defence, but unfortunately nine-tenth 4 of
them had no arms to take up. Nor were there
any cannon at the capital other than a few *all
and indifferent pieces. i
There is certainly a party, and an influential tine,
in Mexico, which begins to tai,; of,peace; 'and 1
where four weeks since they did not date brea the
their l sentiments, they now come out openly and
avow themselves. - Still the measure is fat from
popular. If the priests could be made certain that
they would continue to hold their rich benelii:es,
they would probably. be all in favor of peace.

I -c It is, a fact well established that a large pr.-
portion of the pauperism and crime with which
our country is afflicted, is the result, either directly
or remotely, of intemperance. The observation
of all intelligent men, here and elsewhere, leaves
n 4" doubt that nine-tenths of the persons who fi I
our prisons and almshouses are, themselves inebrt
ates, or the offspring of intemperate parents. The
Rev. Jallin CITIITIB, who has been Chaplain cf
the Massachusetts State Prison for twenty years,
stated a few evenings since, at the temperance
meeting in'Boston, that three-fourths of the 27
inmates at present in the institution with whic
he is connected, and of all other criminals,in th
prisons of that State, had been in the habit of utin,
intoxicating drinks.
