31r. Editor s--In passing the market house this
evening, about 10 o'clock, my attention was at
traeted'by one of the Native American speakers.
I stopped to listen, thinking that I might hear
something new, and I was not mistaken. He was
then giving bis hearers a history of that party, and
anions other things be said, that the women of
~this country should be protected ; for, said he, when
there was only thirteen men of that party, the
women etnie out in mass at:4l declared that the
Bible should not be taken from the American chil
dren by foreigners. Now whether this declaration
about the women has any thing to do with party
politics, I will leave for others to determine, ad
-
mining that such a thing did occur; but every
man of common sense knows it to be a wilful and
downright lie. I would like to know whether it
was a foreign move,- in turning the Catholic, Jews
and Universalist children out of the Jane at. 'school
of Philadelphia, and in other schools of that city;
when they would read the Holy Bible for the Cath
olics, they would read about the Beast, the Pope M
Rome, the man of sin; for the Universalis7, hell
tire and damnation; and the Jews ihey would com
pel to read the New Testament—a book that they
did not believe in. Now, sir, what I iuld like to
know of the Natives is, whether they consider
those acts foreign moves or foreign influence

Istroirrsicx v Taus.-The Baltimore Sun of
Thursday says ;"By a dispatch from a reliable
source in Washington, received at 10 o'clock last
night, we have the information that a rumor was
current, and generally believed in that city, that
the President and Cabinet had decided on calling
an extra session, of CongreSs, and that the Union
would ,contain the official announcement. The
Union had not gone to press when the Telegraph
office closed, consequently we have nothih posi

sent abroad from Washington by gossiping letter

Th e Britannia sailed from England on the

Sympathy for Ireland.
The following description is given by, one who
is said 'to have been an eye-witness at Rotne, of
the feeling manifeited there for the suffering Irish.
Thanka-leaven! true charity is not confined to a
country or to a sect ; and yet ‘vho ought to feel
more deeply for Ireland than those of
nAt the conclusion of the Padre' Ventura's ser
mon, at Rome, in favor of the distressed Irish—
, which was a master-piece of sacred elpquence—
hotwithstanding the present distressed state of the
Roman people, when the collections commenced, a
sympathy impossible to describe was manifested
throughput the assembled multitude, each vied
witlathelothett in'contributing. The poorest gave
! the most liberally; and the very beggars, with tears
•
in their eyes, gave the alms received into the hands
of .the collectors. Many, who had no money to
give supplied some other oblation. Some indi
irviduals, gave their gold seals, or deprived them
selves dOheir watches; even gold ones were freely
given. some poor priests took the silver buckles
trom their shoes; and several females, not satisfied
with their pecuniary offering, despoiled themselves
of rings, brooches, earrings, bracelets, to swell the
collections for their suffering, brethren in 'lreland.
A number of metials, the prizes won by victors
from every partlof the globe—from Lapland to
the Cape of Gooa Hope, from the Shannon to the
Ganges; in many a hard fought literary and scien.
tific contest, were also given—a valuable and ex
pressive tribute of the genius of every country to
the land whose 4ospitable halls, in times of yore,
were open to the students of every clime."
