M. $ On thi'22d ultimo Santa Anna commenced the battle by at attack which he led in person against General Taylor. The cannonading waslong Contirmed and With the most deadly effect on both sides. In the first despatch the information communi cated was, that reports had just reached the ell? from Washington that Mr. Buchanan had receiVed despatches at the State Department, that the Castle San Juan de Ulloa had surrendered to the Army ' and 'Navy of the Vnited States. On the second day the officers made immense exertions and distinguished themselves at all points. The American forces were every, where gallantly led and Taylor was found in.the thick eat of the fight. Santa Anna attempted to outflank Gen. Tayiut The first attacks were made up of the skirmish es, and the rumors are confirmed of the first days) battle. While foremost in the fight Gen. Taylor received a ball in his overcoat, but was not injured Adju-I taut Bliss at his side, was slightly wounded. Adjutant Lincoln greatly distinguished himself! and was killed. This battle lasted until three o'clock, la hen Santa Anna was so hunt pleased that he was compelled to retire to Aglia Num a. IThese reinforcements awaited his command and he was much stronger than before. 1 At this point communications passed - under a flag of truce between the commaiuk.rs cd the two Armies. Taylor, at the last accounts, maintained I bis position undisturbed. Taylor had the .promise of Santa Anus that ilk would get bark Cassius M. Clay', and he had Mex ican prisoners enough to command and make the exchange. The prisoners were afteneardiriardered to be exchanged, including Clay and all under his ••ommand. In the battle Cell.
