'Mr. Knox, a supplement to the att to provide
revenue th,meet the demands on the Treasury and
for other purposes: ,This was drawn up by
the Auditor General, and will, it it becomes a law,; ,
bring several thousand dollars annually into , the'
State Triesury. It creates a new class to the pre
sent litw, classifying Merchants, &c. By the law
as it is, poor retailers whose sales do notexceed
one thousiand dollars annually, are not included - in
bite
-provisions; consevently a large am tof
!business is carried on by petty sellers, fowhich
the State is:ncit entitled,M anY, tax. The present
bill includes them under-the name of the fifteenth
each One of whom shall pay the sum of four
'dollars to the State, for license.
The resolution authorising the Commissioners
of Allegheny county to appoint a' 'Mercantile ap
praiser of taxes came up on second reading. The
questibis was on the amendment of Mr. Forsythe,
to include, also the county of Philadelphia, but it
was lost. ! ! A considerable dis:cussion arose and
several au endmenta were proposed. They were
all stricken off with the exception of Mr. Knox's,
which in , +!lidated the whole bill, and in that shape
it passed final reading, It will bd - probably recon
sidereil. ; 'The Court 'of 'QuartCr Sessions have - ap-'
pointed an appraiser, and the Commissioners have
appointedl!one. The present bill is to legalize the
appointnaint of the latter.

Houses. The new County of Madison consumed
most all She afternoon in the House. The bill was

in Which the Mecklenburg volunteers [N. C.) re
ceived the insulting proceedings of the Whig Gov
ernor and Legislature, in relation to war, is copied
from . the Mecklenburg Jeffersonian. Mecklen
burg is the county, which, in revolutionary times.
made the first declaration of independence, and
the-true fire of the flint is among her people yet:
, "Last Thursday was a proud day for the sons
of - old Mecklenburg. On that day, Capt. Caldwell,
of our volunteers, addressed his ' company company relative
to the .action of the Legislattqa in voting ten
thousand dollars to the Regiment. lie said be did
not address them as Whigs or -Democrats, but as
independent freemen of Mecklenburg, who had
volUnteered in a glorious and patriotic cause.—
Although among the officers of the company, there
,Isere to be4pund the blood relations of Gov. Gra
.hum,, he feltassured that all would freely join in
tie eipressatt.of.indignation at the treatment our
volunteers bad received at the hands of the Legis
lature juid Governor. 'He concluded by offering
the following resolutions, which, by acclamation,

Resard, thabwe view the action of the Le
gislature, in the passage of the law granting $lO,-
000 to the North Carolina Regitnint of Volunteers,
as .;a gross insult to the Volunteers—requiring
them, as it does to endorse a lie upon their own
goyernment, and a stigma of disgrace upon the
cause in which they are about to peril their likes,
should they . receive the money.
Resolved, That we disdain to receive a. 4 cer4 of
said appropriation on any such terms; but liud.it
back, to be divided pro rata among the miserable
partizans who helped to pass the law, to be divided
according to , grade , that grade to be regulated by
the agency each man had in passing the law."'

been presented.to the Judge ()Tale Second District
Court of New Orleans, to set aside the will of the
late Judge, Martirr of Louisiana, on the ground
that being blind, he was physically incapacitated
from making an olograbic will. It will be recol•
!tiled that Judge Martin bequeathed the whole of
his estate, some half million of dollars, to his
brether, and'that the .will was stated to have been
comprised in four or five lines.

the Wabash, which left our landing about 0 &lock.
Monday' night'last, with a heavy toad of Treight
and thirteen passenger* of "which number our in
formant was ()tie, abotit 2 o'clock Tuesday morn
ing, when near Aurora, struck the bank, and im-.
mediately commenced settling, when four passen
gers and one deck hand were drowned. Both
wheel houses almost instantly parted from the hull,
and the cabin at' the same time floated off, which
our informant thinks prOiliablyituied.sile remain
ing passengers from a witiet-ftrafe, as only a
few minutes eller, the hull turned completely bot

Lines being made fast - to tire cabin, it was haul
ed into shore, sufficiently near to enable the pas
sengers who were on it to eicape. The night was
represented as being excessively cold. and the suf
fering as intense, most of the!passengers being more
or less drenched by before reaching the
shore. The wreck of the Metcalfe is considered as
one of the most complete and disastrous from so
trivial a cause, and in the same length of time on
record. The boat had $2,000 or , 5 , 3,000 insured
on her, but whether there was any. on the cargo,
amounting to about 10,000, our informant did not
know. The names of.-the persons drowned, had

TERRIBLE DISASTER
, Mang Wirts.—We learn that the wires of the
Boston and New York Telegraph were cut on Sat
urday, about half an hour after the Steamer's
news was received. The two iron wires were
filed off at Brighton, about four Miles from the ci
ty ; -but the vigilance of the Telegraph officers, and
their watchful suspicions of certain parties enga
ged, in this' InfamousS. transaction, together with
the praiseworthy co-operation of Mr. Monroe, the
Conductor a-the Worcester Steam Thin, in stop
ping the engine at the point of the breach, secured
a prompt repair of the line—insomuch that before
the guilty patties (one of them was a female.)
reached the Worcester station, where they-hoped
to have communicated to New York, a large pun ,
tion of the news - had been sent on. •

Shocking Accident in a Distiffery.—A man named
Donaho, a workman in Wilson's Distillery, Brook
lyn, on Thursday, accidentally fell through a trap
door in the catering of one of the large vats, filled
with boiling molasses. His position was imme
diattly-distovvred; but before he could be got out
he was not only lifeless, but his :flesh was almost
literally. boiled off his bones. His skeleton was
r nearly all that was rescued.
Yuratan.—Advices to the 23d January, a week,
later than the news by way of Havana, have been
received at Washington. On the evening of the
22d of January, the city of Medira capitulated to
the provisional or revolutionary government. A
letter dated S o'clock, January 23d, states that
guns were then tiring and bells ringing, in honor
of the capitulation!
Draining the Country of Specit.--Since the new
Tariff' went into operation, (three months.) there
has been imported into the United States from

At their annual general meeting, the German
SOciety of New York resolved, on account of the
distress prevailing among their countrymen, not
to have any anniversary celebration at this time.

bills for the cargo of the Cambria will amount to

Sunday, and havinr , some difficulty in procuring a
seat, a young lad y who perceived him, kindly.,
made way for him in her pew. The Text was
upoii the terrors of the Gospel, as denounced
against sinners '• to prove which the preacher re
ferred to severa l passages of scriptute, to all of
which the lady seemed 're: 7 f sensitive but some
what agitated. Burns, on perceiving this, wrote
with a pencil on the back of the Bible the follow
ing lines :

On the 2Sth inst., of apoplexy, Jamas Kann,
carpenter, aged 62 years. His friends are invited
to attend the funeral this afternoon, at 3 o'clock,
