.11A . lIVER, • EDITOR . AND PROPRIETOR
PIT T6IIII7ROHi
TUESDAY MORNING, JA.NUAItY 26, 1847.
}'The following article .war Written forses
terday's paper, but was crowded out by a
_press o
other matters :
• ion. lohn N'Lean.!
We observe in one or two of the, federnl papers
in town a call fora meeting of thn:friends of the
-Iron. Jens- .31.*LtAN of Ohio .-,-those, l we. mean,
who are friendly to, his nomination for the Presi- '
denty. The:"Cmit:ersal whig party" has just as
gond-a - right to take up Mr. ill'Lean as any other
. man in the country. We presumc no person has
any very serious objections to Judge . M'Lean either
asu man or a politician. •Ile is a gentleman who
has done but little to call• forth Other praise or
Fondemnation—fie possesses no more wisdom than
will4tninver to carry him through the world ; and
. we should think that be. had no more claims to
the Presidency . than 'a thousand other men in the
Federal ranks. We can name at leasthalf a dozen
of, prominent individuals in this city, belonging to
the same party. with Judge Id - Lean, who possess
as many requisites for the Presidency as he does.
But still we Confess that we do riot care a straw
npon whOm the Federal party let; fall the mantle
of their affections. We have good reason to believe
•
that this IW-Leart movement is not generally eon
.mirred in by the Federal party. There are many
persons who have signed the call ncl doubt without
reflection, and who have a preference fOr other in
dividuals for the Presidency. We know there is
now and ever has been a respectable Webster party
in Pittsburgh—men who have alwaYA looked upon
the Massachusetts statesman as the: seat embodi
ment of Federalism, and eminently 'worthy of
their confidence and support. A 14ge body of the
npposition until very recently, have rested their
hopes upon Mr. eras.; but it is perfectly obvious
that a "change has come o'er the spirit of their
<lmams." Since Mr. CLAT took :sides with the
Democracy in the war with Mekico, he has un
questionably lost the confidence of the traders of
the federal pasty; but still the great mass of the op
position are as strongly wedded to him as ever
they were. To doubt this would be to doubt their
devotion to their country. We consider the
Mican demonstration in this city as e stab at Mr.
Clay, and those"who participate in it unconsciously
will in the end discover such to be tlie fact. Now
is the time for Mr. Clay's true friends to bestir
themselves, or they xvill r tind out when it is too
late that they have been checkmated.
Railroad Meeting at ll'oosier.
The good people of •Wooster are: determined to
flare a Railroad to this city.. We hope they will
not be disappointed. At the meeting a few days
since, the following resolutions were adopted:
Resolved, That Ezra Dean. John Sloane. and Ed
ward Avery. be appointed a Conmiittee to corres
Vaud with the citizens of Pittsburgh and interme
diate points, upon the subject of the above Rail
road.
flesolred,-That petitions be circulated, to bc„pre.
rented to the Legislature of Ohio for the incorpo
ration of the Company to construct a Railroad
from Mansfield through Wooster, :Massillon,' Can
ton and Salem, to the Pennsylvania line.
Resoircd, That the Corresponding , Committee
Are authorized to call Railroad meetings whenever
they may think-expedient, and that this meeting
rtow. adjourn until Saturday the 30th inst, to meet
at the Courtllouse in Wooster, at ode o'clock P. M.
, The Conferee, meeting at Franklin, on the 15th
inst., passed the following resolutions:
Rrseivcd, That the administration of FRANCIS
R. SHUN E, and particularly the doctrines of his
late tnessage, meets - our hearty approbation, andin
it we recognize a beacon light around which the
democracy may again rally in safety; and, that we
reconimeod. Francis R. Shunt- to the said• delegates,
for renomination to the Gubernatorial Chair. '
Resolvcd, That Robert Lambarton and Geo. W.
Connely, Esq., be our Senatorial Conferees; andl).
W. S. Cook, Col. John-Evans and Geo. P. flumes,
our Representative conferees, to meet With those
of the other counties in this Senatorial and Repro
sentative.districts,• that they be instructed to sup
port Monuow B. Lowey, Esq., fur Senatorial Del
• gate, and SAatr - ez, F. Dive, .Esq., far Representa
tive Delegate to the 4th of March Convention, and
that the -said Conferees, in case of inability to at.
tend, have power to appoint substitutes.
MORSE LT 51.. us. 01ltrt.Lx ET .ti.—This case
is now pending at the United Ssatestircuit Court,
at Philadelphia. Prof. Morse and othek., patentees
of Morse's Telegraph, filed an injunction against
Mr. O'Reilly and his associates, to compel them to
discontinue their telegraphic operations. The de
fendants resisted the motion for an injunction, and
produced documents and proofs which the com•
plainants were nut prepared to meet, and herice
complainants asked for a continuance of the case
until the Ist-of February next, which was granted
by the Court. Mr. O'Reilly, in a card published
in the Pennsylvanian, states that himself and asso
ciates had prepared a reply to publications of
Messrs. F. 0. J. Smith & Kendall, but out of de
ference to the Court, pending the action, it has
been postponed. •
LOOK AT Tuts I—ln one of the letters of the N.
York correspondence of the "Unicin,'? we find the
following statement:
'“The Hon. C. Gray, a millionaire of Boston,
Wthere' wealth is synonomous with inore luxury
and refined taste than in most other places in this
Republic, it is said in the papers, gave trbao night
before last, the gettit , up of which irsaid to have
rost over $5OOO, and -the - Wine alone more than
4.500; the sidewalks were royetcd for coinpany
to alight on, end so On."
It is said that the same Mr. Gray could not re
concile it to his sense of duty to give a:single t farth
ing to "aid and comfort" the patriotic volunteers
from blassa eh usetts! Curious people in this *orld !
•

aAtti coA Costruair. - -The Diario of Mexico
copies an extract from Mr. Webster's 4 'great Bos
ton speech" in opposition to the war. Quite nat-
ural! Indeed, there appears to be a common feel
ing between the Icadrra of the federal party in this
country, and the plundering despots of Mexico.
"A fellow feeling makes them wondrous kind."
NORTH CAIIDLINA RFAiInENS.—A letter to the
editor of the Baltimore Patriot, dated Raleigh,

c 0- The Washington correspondent of the New
rYorlc Evening Post very justly says of the Wise
trouble "Nobody here is ever surprised to hear
that Mr. Wise hus quarrelled with either govern
ments or individuals, for that is his forte. He
quarrelled with Mr. Gordan, the Consul at Rio
Janeiro, to the great discredit of out country. He
was continually quarrelling while at home, and
the only wonder is that he has not succeeded in
exciting serious ill feeling between his own gov
ernment and the Brazilian court before."
WAR Movt3tEN•rs.—The La Patric of the 13th
inst., Spanish paper of New Orleans, learns that
the troops of the ten regiments asked for by the

the whole. of the disposable forces which can be
collected at that point, will fall upon Vera Cruz
and San Luis de Potosi.
Di.vrtmons.—Last year -upwards of 70,000

Ohio growth. • -
More than 850,000 barrels of sour were inspect

FOUR years ago last Aagust, the capital of France
was astonished in consequence or a discovery

hospitals, the Medical Society - of. Paris,(the-beet,..... !
