In further execution of the said act, I have cau sed the Ccattmissioner of the General Land Office to publish with this proclamation, a brief descrip tion of the Mineral region in which these lands lie, rand of the lands rtotr offered for sale., , which has been prepared front official documents and other means of information. Given under my hand at the City of Washington, this twentieth day of November, Anno Domini One thousand eight hundred and forty-six. By the President: .1 ANES K. POLK. Jamas 11. PIPER, 4leting Commissioner cf the General ..I.a ltd . Office. The lands embraced by the above pruclamation of the President of the United States, contain many of the most valuable lead mines actually opened and worked, vthich have yet been discovered; and from indications on ;the surface, and experiments made is digging, it is believed that many others equally valuable exist, and'inaf be exploned at 'a trifling expense. From the great number. of theie mines it would be impracticable to, give an adequate idea of their character and locatidn, without extending this no tice beyond proper b.Ounds. Iti's sufficient to state that they are situated in the section of country bounded on the south by the-Illinois State line;on west, - by the 3lississippi river; on the north, by a line draWn nearly parallel to the ecintli side of the Wisconsin river, at the average distance of ten or twelve miles therefrom; acid on the east by a men idian line passing through the sources of Sugar Creek r the whole district covering a surface equal to about sixty full townships. All necessary fa cilities for transporting the products to a market are afforded by the Mississippi and Wisconsin riv ers, rod their tributaries, the Blue, Grant, Platte, Pekatonika, and other rivers by which the district is intersected. The above district was explored by Dr. Owen, the geologist of the State of Indiana, under in structions from the Treasury Department, and in compliance with a resolution of the douse of Itep resentatives, passed the iith of February, 1899.-1 The_ able report_ of this gentleman, published in 1844, with the charts and phitrations, (Senate document, No. 407 Ist session, 26th Congress,) contains precise information as to the location of each mine, and shows, that in 1839; the lead mimes of Illinois, lowa, and Wisconsin; though . only par tially worked, produced upwardsnf thirty millions pounds of lead, of which those in Wisconsin, it anneals, yielded the larger proportion; and further, that the whole district, ifproperly mined, would yield one :hundred and fifty millions pounds per annum. Particular lists of the sections and parts of sec tions to be offered at said sale, have been furnish ed to the registerl and receiver at Mineral Point, together with maps on which the location of each tract is designated; all of which will be subject to the examination of Those wishing to purchase., JAMES H.
