Acting Commissioner of the General Land Office.
The lands is the DIXON district; embraced in the'
above proclamation of the President of the United
States, were explored by Mr. Owen, the geologist of •
the State of Indiana, under the instructions from the,
rTreasary Department, and in compliance with a re
solution of the House of Representatives; passed 6th I
February, 1539. The able report of this gentleman,'
published as document No. 219, House of Represen
tatives, first session of 26th Congress, shows that;
these lands include all the pludnetive mines, and the
entire region in which, Wu* tibservations during hie
survey, there is reison to believe that valuable veins
of ore may readily be round. Further, that in 1839,
the lead' mines of Illinois, lowa, and Wisconsin,.
though only partially worked, produced. upwards of
thirty millions. pounds of lead—those of Illinois
yielding their full proportion—and that the whole
; district, irproperly mined, would yield one handred
and fifty millions pounds per annum. •
Those lauds being situated on and near the Aria
sissippi and Fever avers, the cost of transporting the
:products of them to. St. Louis is only . about fifteen
cents per hundred pounds. The soil is of excellent
quality, and yields abundantly all the products of i
that latitude.
The lambi 4 - the SIIAWNEETOWN district have
not been explored es folly as those In Dixon:. 'Re
cent discoveries hm7e been made,howeier; - or rich
veins of thq sulphuret lead il zinc, contiguous
'to and on both sides of - these lands, indicating the;
existence Ur Xicallar deposites within them. The fa
cilities for manufacturing white, and, red lead are
;represented.as being ample; and as the lands are
; situated within about seven miles of the Ohio river,
the metal, in any form,.cau be transported to all the
'principal markets at a trifling cost.
