STAR BAKERY
The hands in our office enjoyed a rich feast, on
Thuiiday, at the expense of Mr. Bickley, of the
" Star Bakery," Diamond alley. Printers are fre
quently laid under obligations to friends for good
things, but we never before saw a treat so-rich en
ter an office. Just think of it—a huge bushel
basket heaping full with every variety of cakes and
pastry!
The treat was the more highly esteemed, as it' .
came from ono of the best establishments in ~the
city.. All who patronize the " Star Bakery" will
, receive ample satisfaction, we warrant. A man
who is generous to the printer is sure to Fe clever
to his customers. We never heard an exception to
this rule.

Mn. F.iirron:—The reported proceedings, in your
paper this morning, of an anti-licence meeting,
signed John McCracken, Prest., contains n queer
preamble. Perhaps John A. Wills, who eloquent
ly addressed the, meeting, will give an exposition
thereof, as he is a Pittsburgh lawyer. It reads as
follows: 'Whereas, The Legislature of our State
has given vs the power to remedy a great evil, and
as our Courts bave heretofore disregarded our
,re
monstrances, we are therefore happy to have the
opportunity of meeting the friends of the traffic at
the ballot-box.' What traffic is it .which gives
such happiness to this anti-licence meeting. espe
cially when the friends thereof meet at the ballot
box? Is it a traffic in our Courts that have here
tofore disregarded their remonstrances? If so, Mr.
Wills is no doubt well qualified to explain the
cause of the anticipated happiness. But the first
resolution says:'"As the sense of this meeting, that
we heartily approve of the law lately -passed by
our Legislature, giving the people the, privilege of
voting on the license question.'
This, too, is rather queer. Because of a most
absurb law, unjust in principle, and stupidly as
unconstitutionally worded, suitable only to give
trouble and expensive litigation, bringing grist
only to-the latter's mill; that this evidence of
incompetency in our legislators should be heartily
approved•by Mr. ?I'Cracken, and Mr.
they
and others, seemsvery strange, because they should
be men of some reflection. Mr. Wills may have
other than interested views, - and if so,' he' must
know that, as the law is compiled, 'tis but a dis
graceful exhibition of 'Rainless statesmanship, or
worse, 'tis pandering to a public, delusion which
"supposes human improvement can be attained
through agency. of legislative action only, - and
stimulating our citizens into the vortex of /litiga
tion. • - • • A SUBSCRIBER.
