The Ohio Patriot,.an excellent Democratic pa
per published at New Lisbon, by our` old friend
V7m. EGAZNI. .M.onu.sx, Esq., contains the follow
ing very excellent. suggestion. It: is: worthy of
•
notice • • • !.
w,..11 ILEGISTCII.-TIMELY PROItO4ITION.-It
has been suggested that the cause of the country
may be promoted by the opening ofd war register
in every city, town, and village, the purpose of
preserving..an authentic: record of the ,toryism
which may be displayed by individualS.dur;rg the.
continuance of the present war. Id this register
it is proposed to record the names of stich person
ages us Make themselves zealous in Pleading,. the
-cause of the enemy, and oppose the wae into which
the people and the government of the C.-States
.have been forced by Mexican aggression,
and robbery. 14eildes the names of the:individuals
who pronounce against the justness of our cause,
such sentiments as are particularly odious should
be placed on the register. Where an individual ex
presses sympathy for the enemy, Wigles the death
of the President, or the downfall of the national
`administration as it punishment fur having engag
:e,:d in the war. , the sentiment of the tory should be
repaired in his own language as. near as possible.
Ml-statements intended fur entry :on the record
'should be verified by the name of the
. witness or
contributor..
"The above is a general outline of the plan.—
Such a record as it proposes will sae much doubt
and prevarir.tion in afterywa. Had such a reels.
ter been kept in 1812, the denials of: those who op
posed the mar of that ere would now avail them
nothing. We hope that our friends everywhere in
Ohio will move in this matter without delay." •
If the proposition of the Patriot was carried into
effect in every county, city and village in the coun
try, it would serve a good purpose heicafter. There
art persona who are now denouncing the war with
Mexico, in the most violent moonet, who will
hereafter strenuously deny that they !ever uttered
a single word against it. If their treasonable lan- 4
guage was reduced to writing, and accurately pre
served, it would h; a beautiful dish: to transmit to
posecrityl There are persons nowitviitg who said
hard things of the war of 1812, and denounced the
adtrainistralion of the patriotic MiOttiox in the
mast intemperate manner, who at present wish to
pass for patriots par excellence. Sonia of the old I
federal newspaper-are still in existence, where
may be found chronicled the Anti-American dec. i
larations of these gentlemen., Their oppOsition to
the war in which the country is now engaged is
quite natural. In their estimation:our country
never right—always wrong.
It is a glorious reflection that those who are now
raising their voices in opposition to the war arc
comparatively few in number: The great body pi
the Whig party are honest and well-meaning men.
The:) , ardently love their country,: and like true
patriots will madully defend that country from
the insults and outrages:l - Tits enemy. But the lead
era of the federal party entertain quite different
opinions. Their hearts are insensible to every pa
lriotic,emotion—theiftongues are strangers to the
utterance of.pure and lofty sentiments. It is the
leaders of the federal party, federal Editors and ora
- tors, who are now disgracing, themselves, and
blackening the character of their country, by talc : ,
aides with the lawless and desperate Mexican
bandits, the insulters of our flag, the plunderers of
our people and the murderers of our kinsmen. It
makes our blood boil with righteous" indignation
to see men professing to, be Americans, so forget
ful of the duty' they 'owe to themseNes, to society,
to their families:to the government which protects
thern';'.-as ?to publicly take a stand in opposition
to their oWn country, when she is clearly and in
disputably in the right. Their acts cannot he cal
led Treason, iii the strict legal meaning of the word,
- because of the absence of some "overt act,'! some
manual deed, in assisting and succoring the ene
my. But moral treason is stamped upon their
he3rta, which is an offence still more disgraceful
'and infamous, becuriie it can be committed with
<impunity, and not subject the offender to arrest
and prosecution.
We second the motion of the Ohio Patriot. We
hope our friends will treat the matter seriously,
and act upon the suggestions contained in the
isle. For our own paa, we iutend

vine, in Belmont county, Ohio. it is the rarest
specimen of blasphemy and infidelity, if not tory..
ism, that we hate seen in many a day. The edi•
tor is down on Governor Bartley for appointing a
day of thanksgiving this year, in the following
beautilid language:
"Fur, what have the people of Ohio now to be
grateful that they are to set apart one day from
their secular busitie4s. Is it that the President has
sent 20,000 men to wrest from a foreign nation its
territory without compensation, or' Without just
cause or provocation made a decent upon Mexi

is it because Ohio has a debt of $20,000,000, when
the people have little or nothing to pay it with!
Or is it because the people of Ohio are now cursed
with the ague and bilious diseases, through three
,fourths of the State.? They who see fit to thaol: God
!for such things may do so, but for us, ire shall stand
clear of all such tomfoolery."
The blasphemy of the last clause in the above arti
cle, which refers to the prevailing sickness of the
last season, is most shocking.

THE NATIONAL DEBT AND FINANCES OF
MEXICO
.
The national debt of Mexico is one of very con
siderable importance, and may be divided into the
two gteat clas'es of foreign and . internal debt.—
The internal debt amounts to $18,3'30,000; and, in
IS4I. the customs were mortgaged to pay this
sum in the glowing subdivisions.
INTERNAL DEBT. Amount.
17 pr et. of customs devoted to a debt of $2,040,000
15 do do do 410,000
12 do do do 2,100,000
10 do do do' 3,100,000
S do.„' do do 1.200,000
10 do I tobacco fund debt . 9,700,000
10} do ' interest on English debt
10 do garrison fund
OSI 18,550,000
1i balance clear of liens for the Government.
The foreign debt - is still larger than this; and in
cluding the above) I will state the entire national
responsibility as . 'it existed at the end of last year.
FOREIGN DEBT. Amount.
Internal , debt $18,550,000
Debt to English creditors 60,000,000
United States claims and Interest, say 2,400,000
Copper to be redeethed 2,000,000
Claims for Hill/zo 700,000
Bustamente loan 300,000
$84,150,000
The prospect Of the payment of this debt is then
carefully considered, and thus summed up: -
" The mint at Guanajunta, or the right to
coin at that place, was contracted for in 1842 .by
a foreign'house in Mexico for $71,000 cash for
the term of fourteen years-, nt the same time that
another offer was before the Government, stipula
ting for the payment of $400,000 for the same pe
riod, payable 'in annual instalments of $26,000
each. The $71,000 in hina were, however, deem
ed-of more, value than the prospective $400,000!
ThiS mint leaves a nett annual income of $00,000!
It appears to us quite evident that ull the taxes
which Can be levied, even to an amountequtd- to
the confiscation on the prodtice of labor in Mexi
co, will be found to' be far shortof the amount ne
cessary to maintain the army, the_ civil expendi
ture, and the payment of the interest of the na
tional debt, especially while the chuich , and priests
absorb so large a share of the produce of-indus
try.
