experience in tins art bar enabled him to overcome
many of the objections too common to pictures taken,
by this method,
Mr. Porter is aware that the impression has gone
abroad (owing to the - many failures to produce good
pictures,) that clear and distinct Daguerreotypes can
not be made in Pittsburgh. His experiments, how

him in saying that as good pictures can be made here

Jitritss It. Pirrn, _ .
Acting Comniistiorter of ihe•Gettcral Land Office.
The lands in the DIXON district, embraced In the
above proclamation of the President of the United
States, were explored by Mr. Owen; the geologist of 1
the State of Indiana, under the instructions from the ,
Treasury Department, and in compliance with a re
solution oldie Udirse of Reprcsentativei; passed 6tla
February, 1539.. The able report of thistentlctnain,
published as document No. 239, house of Represen
tatives, first cession of filllth Congrosi, ahows that'
these lands include all the productive mine/pi and the
entire region in which, from observations daring his
survey, there is reason to believe that 'valuable veins
ofore may readily be found. Further, thatin 1539,
the lead mines of Illinois, lowa, and Wisconsin,
though only partially worked, produced upwards of
thirty millions pounds of lead—those of Illinor .1
yielding their fall proportion—and that the whole
rifstrict, ifproperly mined, would 'yield 040 hundred
/and fitly millions pounds per annum.
Thuile lands -being situated on and near the Mis
sissippi
and Fever rivers, the cost or transporting the
products of them to St. Louis is only 'shout fifteen
' cents per hundred pounds. The Foil is of excellent
quality, and yields abundantly' all tiro .prodUcts'• of
that latitude. .
The-lands in the SIIAWNEETOWN district have
not been explored as fully as thoie in Dixon. -Re
cent discoveries have been made, however, of rich
1 veins of the sulphuret of lead and zinmeontignous
to and on-both sides of these lands, indicating the
existence of similar deposites within Thom• -The fa
cilities for manufacturing whiee and red lead. am
represented' as being ample; and as the landi are
situated within about seven miles of the-Ohio river,
the metal, in any form; can be transported to- all the
principal markets at a trifling cost. ..-- -- •
