The Setretery states the important fact; that "at it be buried. We can do as, much her as
the date ..of the repeal of the tariff of 1842, the she ail to us, but why:do harm at all. If a new
reveille Was declining. receipts under it into 'era of good feeling-Wile begun, kind offieeiWoula .
the treasury were less by the.sum of $815,444 ST
,follow,' and bcith parties be geinaraiii the end. We
during the last fiscal year , terminating on the 30th shall to this subject again.
June, 1840, than the receiptsdutin g the fi scal year I
ending on the 30th June; 1845.
"•Thet this decline was progressive, and arose
front the prohibitory character of the specific du
ties, is . proved . by a talde .which accompaxics the
report,- (marked G,) from, Which it.' appears that,
for the fiscal year ending . 3oth-June„lB44, the ex
cess of revenue produced by specific over ad va
llorem diitieswas $ , 81,860 74; whereas, during the
fiscal yew' ending 39. th Juue, 1845, the ad valorem
exceeded the specific duties $1;737,379 57; and
and during - the lark fiseal year the ad valorem ex.
ceed the' specific duties $2,063,534 54. As the
specific duties in their practical operation were be
coming,-every. day more prohibitory, the revenue
tinder' the tariff of 1842 must have continued to
Sink so rapidly as soon to have caused a great de.
Licit, even in time of peace, and thus have requi
ted ultimately a resort to direct taxes or excises to
support the government." .
The Secretary speaks in the most encouraging
manner in relation to the operations of the new
Tariff law. He says: "The country was never
more prosperous, and we have never en:riyed such
large and profitable markets fur all our products.
This-is not the result of an inflated currency, but
is an actual 'lncrease of wealth and business.—,
Whilst agriculture, commerce, and navigation, re.
leased from onerous taxes and restrictions, are thus
improved anti invigorated, manufactures are not
depressed." The large profits of manufacturers may'
be in some- cases somewhat diminished; but that
branch of industry, now reposing more on its own'
skill and resources, is still prosperous and progres
sive. New manufactories are being erected through
out the country, and still yield a greater profit, in
most cases, than capital invested in other pursuits."'
The. Secretary further Says:
"The labor employed in agriculture. commerce,
and navigation, is as much American labor l'as
that engaged in manufactures, with less of midi. ,
eery as a substitute. As 'you depress these three
great interests, the demand for workmen in those
pursuits is diminished. The labor thus deprived
of employment is thrown into the power of the
inanufacturers, and must enable them to brim ,
down wages to the lowest point which will ailbr7l
a scanty subsistence; whereas, if agriculture.Tom
tneree, and navigation are improved. as the result
of low duties, there must be increased competition
and demand for labor, and its wages must be en
hanced.;
The Secretary again repeats the suggestion made
in his last report in tegard to the reduction and
graduation of the public lands in favor of actual
settlers !and cuitivators. He says:
"It is' believed that the sales, at the prices re
duced 3. 1 .0 graduated, should be confined to limited
quanti4es. sold only for settlement and cuitivaiion.
In this manner, whilst the aggregate wealth of the
nation and revenue of the government are rapidly
augmedted, the wages of labor must be enhadced,
by atibiling to our working classes and the nidus
trious poor certain means, whenever.a reduction of
their w'Nesshall be proposed, of purchasing home,
for themselves and families, at the reduced rates
to. be established, in relation to the pnblic hinds,
.by the graduation bill."
The!Sedretary speaks favorably of ti,e Ware.
housing System established by ch. Act of August
6, 1844, and recommends that it be not disturbed.

the coast of the United States within the pat year

For the last year our citizens have been the dupes
of the haltiritoreans: The scales at last have fallen --------
from their eyes; and they see that they line been I• Capt. Bennett's Company. the Philadelphia
the suhjects of a despicable coquetry. It is now Light Guards. arrived about 10 o'clock Sunday
night. They took lodgings at the National Hotel,
a. certainly to our mind that the Baltimore and '
Ohio Railroad Company seek a terminus for their I Water street. They are a brave looking set of
road elsewhere than at Pittsburgh, notwithstanding' n " .
their hate proceedings, and their assertions which
lead &erne to think the contrary. Let them go; ts e
believe that they will be the losers by their pent
.fogging Policy, not us. , When the people of Vir
ginia Orel told that they must cease to be Virginians
before they can have the Baltimore Railroad pass
through !their state, they will speak as become cit
izens of the Old-Dominion. Mr. ISI - Lane asks the
people, or Pittsburgh to forget that they are Penn
sylvarnians. We only wish he was here to learn
rtheir ..en'timents on the subject. In the Councils
ville 'Railroad, Mr. NI - Lane—for he is the Conlin
' iiy, as; Lhuis the 11th was the State—was offered
the means of making Baltimore equal to any other
comnlereial city in the Union—for with the trade
of tik Mississippi Valley be might base In-ought
to her (their the commerce of the region bordering
'the. GeLt Inland seas of the North—but, with an
unaccountable folly or madness, he has forsaken
the highway to prosperity to pursue through the
wilderness of Vitginia an ignis fatons.
Ask he terms which the Baltimore Company of
fer to', Pittsburgh never will be accepted, what is
the ditty of our citizens? Some propose to turn
their !backs to the East and look to the Westward
only. !Let the East iced us, they say. We are not
certain; but this is the true policy of Pittsburgh,
and di 'our citizens are alive to the subject, they
will doubtless act with vigor and intelligence, as
their ;interests prompt them. But should we aban
don the Connellsville Railroad, and give up a char
ter that cost us so much labor to obtain? This
is a qustion to reflect upon. While we push for
ward a connexion with the Lakes, and become
link in the great chain of Railroads which will
soon bind together the States of Ohio, Indiana, Illi
nois and Michigan, it strikes us that it would he
impOlitic to disregard a connexion with the sea
board. We have'the means at the least exPetise
and without further legislation, of reaching the At:
lantic, without compromising Pennsylvania feelings,
and that is-by uniting the Connellsville Railroad
with the CumberlantLValley Railroad at Chem
bersbarg. That this route is practicable we think
can easily be demonstrated; even Mr. Latrobe ad
twitted its practicability, and with considerable
fears, too, and thought the connection could ,be
spaelewith less expense to Pennsylvania than any
'other.' The only great obstacle to this route is the
Cove Mountain, and it is said that this can be
overcome Without much
.difficulty. Let the peo
ple of Philadelphia turn their attention to the sub
jek of this connexion, and by taking hold of it at
once:lntl in goal earnest they will strike a blow on
'Baltimore that she will never get over. We have
no making feelings toward the eiti*ens of Baltimore
but we' feel towards Mt. M - Larie, and the Directors
of his Company, pretty much as an honest lover
feels towards a coquette who has abandoned him
in the - hopes of marrying _a worthless' spendthrift.
Let us look :no longer to Baltirnor., and if' she
feelie us again let us tell hetir is too late/ :Phila.

cr.• We have heard many complaints made on
account of a want of preparations for the recep
tion of the volunteets from Philadelphia. The:
Barracks were not furnished with conveniences
for sleeping and no provisions were supplied
them. We do not know upon whom the blame
of this neglect rests. It is, however,,a disgrace on
the part of those whore duty it was to make ar
rangements.—Trlcgraph
We do not attribute to the editor of the Tele
graph any had motive; but we must say that the
above paragraph is very unjust. It is only neces
sary for us to state that the Philadelphia volunteer's
express themselves perfectly satisfied with their
reception in this city. More has been done for
their accommodation than the laws authoriie.—
. The Quartermaster's agent, Mr. Gordon, - took
Christy's building and furnished it as reluireil, on
1 his own individual responsibility. No requisition
has yet been made upon him for quarters for the
Regiment, and none can be made until the compa
nies are all mbstered into service and the Regi
ment completely organized. Each soldier is allow
ed fitly cents per day for his support while here,
which is sufficient to ply their boarding in the
best hotels. However, they have been provided
for thus far by the citizens free of expense,
We have heard these "complaints" alluded to
by the Telegraph on the street, but thought them
unworthy of notice. When the volunteers them
selves begin to murmur it will be time enough to
enquire ~ u pon whom the blame of this neglect
rests." •

CONSUMPTIVES llnwann or Imrosirron.,—The
Wild Cherry Tree iu all ages of the world, and
in all conntried where it is known, both among civil
ized as well as- savage nations -and. tribes, is justly
celebrated-for its., wonderful medicinal qualities.-1
This, combined with many other valuable iegeta
ble extract:, and prepared by a skilful physician,
who possesses the ailvantagas of the experience and
practice of his profession of nearly a quarter of a
century, must be a valuable acquisition to those who
are laboring under any of the dangeroni diseases of
the Lungs so common in our Climate. Such a prepa
ration is Dr. Swayne's Compound Syrup of:Wild
Cherry, prepared by himself at his labartory. in Phil
adelphia. Dr. Wistar, ,of Philadelphia, has not nor
never has had any thing to do with any preparation. of
Wild Cherry, but there was one got up in Philaciel-'
phia and the name OS WiStat attached, the right of
which was sold out to some merchants in the West,
!If you would get the genuine article; the only one
prepared by a regular physician, see that the signa
tore of Ur. Swayne, of Philad , n., is on each bottle.

PHILADELPIDA, Sept. 28,1846.;
Dr.ll.Swayne:—Dear Sir—Having seen the "as
tonishim, cure" periorrned on. Mr. Thomas by your
Compound Syrup of Wild Cherry, I was induced to
try it bn myself. 1 was taken with a violent cough,
spitting of blood, shortness of breathing, - together
with violent attacks of Asthma. I overdone myself
from exertion which I was not able to perform, which
prostrated my system to a great, extent. I com
menced the use of vhur Coalmannil Syrup of ,Wild
Cherry, together with your-Extract of Sarsaparilla,
and Tar Pills, which gave the . almostsMmediate re-'
lief, and I am glad to give my testimony to all who'
may be afflicted in a similar way. I ammow able to
resume my daily 'Wear. It would do well to sec that
the si,,_anaturo of Dr. 11. SWAYNE is on each bottle of
Wild - Cherry. Sly itiii - derce is in Thirteenth street
two doors from the corner of Witless., where I shall
he glad to have an interview with.all similarly afflic
ted. WM. R. WALTON.

Cracrisnav, Feb. 15, 1846.
Dr. Swayne—Dear Sir—Permit me to tak the lib
erty of writing to you at this time, to express appro
bation, and recommend - to the attention of heads of
nannies and to others your valuable medicine—your
Compound Syrup of Wild Cherry. In my travels of
late, I have seen in a great many instLinces, the won
. derful effects of your medicine in relieving children
of very obstinate complaints, such as coughing,
wheezing,' choking with the phlegm, asthmatic-at
tacks, Re. I should -not have written this letter,
however, at present, although I have felt it my duty
to add my testimony to it Far some time, had it not
been for a late instance where the medicine above
alluded to was instrumental in restoring to. perfect
„ health an only child,w hose case was almosthopeless,
in a family, of my acquaintance. I thank heaven,'
said a doting mother, 'my child is saved from the
jaws of death. , '
Beyond all doubt, Dr. Swaync s s Compound Syrup
of Wild Cherry is the most valuable medicine in this
or any othei country. am certain I have witnekeed .
more than ono hundred eases where it has been at
tended with complete success. .I haveased it myself
in-an obstinate attack, of the Bronchitis, in which. it
proved effectual in an. exceedingly short thee,
sidering the severity of the case. I can recommend
it in the fullest confidence :Wits superior Ivirtuen, I
would advise that no amity should be withoutit; it
is very pleasant, and always beneficial; worth double
and often ten times its price. ' The public are assur
ed there is no quackery about it.
