Mr. Porter respectfully announces that he has at
considerable expense fitted up apartments, and ar
ranged light for Daguerreotyping purposes. His long'
experience in this art has enabled him to overcome
many of the objection; too common to pictures taken
by this method,
Mr. Porter is aware that the impression has gone
abroad (owing to the many failures to produce good'
pictures,) that clear and distinct Daguerreotypes can
not be made in Pittsburgh. His experiments, how
ever, since he has opened his Gallery, fully iearrant,
him in saying that as good pictures can be made here
as elsewhere.
Ladies and gentlemen are invited to call and ex

•
The lands in the mineral regiOnsy embraced in the
above proclamation of the President of the United
States, are believed to contain the richest mines of
lead that have yet been discovered; the ore yielding
about eighty percent, of pure metal. Copper, also
has been found in this region in considerable quan-
tities.
. Great advantages are said to exist for the manu
facture of lead in various forms, particularly into
shot, the river banks being so elevated as to require
little or no expense in the erection of tnwerst and
the ore, from its greet purity, may be manufactured
into snot by the; first smelting.
The location of these mines being near the Mis
sissippi river, affords great facilities of transporta
tion, the average cost of which to St. Louis is about
fifteen cents per hundred pounds. The soil is rep
resented as beieg' unusually fertile, producing all
the small grain lin great abundance,
_and furnishing
excellent range.for cattle-.-Ttluis presenting equal in
ducements to the tigtitulturitit and the miner.
The DUBUQUE mines in fractional townships

east, situated on the banks of the Mississippi, are
considered the mostimportant; the OURAEGOIninea.
in townships ; eighty-mne and ninety, erring:6'a=
east, are thenekt in value; and the CATTESE mines
in fractional township eighty-eight, of range three
east, also on the river, are the third. Other mines
have been discovered in this reginnt ind it is very
probable that nature explorations will bring to light
