The Lehigh. This boat, recently disabled by the

its impress on a aide - -board, and several other arti-

:The liforia.—This ill fated boat, the loss of which
is ~noticed in our colemns this evening, was one of
thelmestin the trade in which she ran. Perhaps
rid-boat ever enjoyed greater popularity, and none
have-been more successful in their trips. Capt.

• Why.is there not a regular line of steamers
running between the cities on the western rivers
and. Brownsville, and 'thus obviate the necessity of
-ireight between the east and west being landed
and reshipped at Pittsburgh, occasioning extra
expense to shippers?
The reason is this: The citizens of Pittsburgh
were fearful that Brownsville would become the
head of navigation, and to prevent such a result,
they. in building the iron bridge over the Monon
gahela river, built it so low that steamboats can
pay.pass.inder it at a very low stage of water,
suideven then not without lowering their chimneys.
This bridge - stands as a lasting monument of the
seltstrness and injustice of its builders.

a brisk place—it is an im
pmtant point in, a commercial view, and • we re
joice in every 'indication of its prosperity. We
expect some day to see it a great overgrown city,
reeling with business and adorned with .wealth.
'nese are the sentiments of all Pittsburgh.
As to the uselfishisiess" charged upon the people'
. ofthiScity in the above article from the llerald, we
-ein truly say that the editor is mistaken. We do
not believe that one men concerned in the Wire Sus

• erecting the bridge lower than it might be. We
*di.nofteliectliat Brownsville was thought of at
the rime--certainly we did not hear that town spo

As to a regular line of steamers from Browns.viUe- I

might be practicable; and when business makes it
so, the Bridge will be no barrier.

By the President: JAMES K. POLK.
JAMES 11. Pier,u, •
-.lrting, Commissioner of the General land Office.
- JAMES MAY
The lands in the mineral regions, embraced in the
above proclamation of the President of the United
States, are believic,j. to contain the richest mines of
lead that have yet been discovered; the ore yielding
about eighty per rent, of pure indM Copper, also
has been tbaniPiti this region in considerable quan
tities.
Great advantages are said to exist for the manu
facture of lead in various forms, particularly into .
shot, the river banks 'being so elevated as to require
little or no expense in the erection of towers; and'
the ore, from its great purity, may be manufactured
into snot by the first smelting.
The location of these mines being near the Mis
sissippi river, affords , great facilities of transporta
tion, the average cost of which to St. Louis is about
fifteen cents per hundred pounds. The soil is rep
resented as being unusually fertile, producing all
the small grain in great abundance, and furnishing'
excellent range for cattle-41ms presenting equal in-,
decements to the agriculturist and. the. miner.
The DUBUQUE mines in fractional towaships,l
eightyreight,.eighty ulna, and ninety, of range two
cast, situated on the banks of the Mississippi, are
considered the Most important; the DURAXOO mines
in townships eighty-nine and ninety, °fringe one
east: p are the next in value; and the CATTESE mines
in fractiohal township eighty-eight, of range three
east, also eut thi river, aro the third. Other mines
torre been discovered in'this region; and it is very
probable that future explorations will bring to light
othertias rich, and productive as miy now knoivn.
