can hear of no contracts having been made for
paleking since our last. For hogs there is no price
settled by our dealers, but the general opinion is
that it will range from $l5O to $2OO per lOU lbs.,
according to the weight and quality."
The following paragraph is from the Eaton
(Preble county, 0.,) Register of the =l2th :
"Farmers are now beginning to inquire about
what wilt be the price or Pork. We have seen
nothing that will .enable us to form any estimate
as to the probable market price. Barrel meat has
improved some recently ; and the price may be bet
ter than was anticipated. It is.thought by all those
who raise pork that the price will be low; hence
there will not.be as mach brought into market as
there would otherwise have been.: and this may
tend 'somewhat to improve the market. From the
Upper Mississippi we learn there is a great surplus
of Pork or the first quality. Some engagements

The lands in the bIXON district, embraced in this
above proclamation of the President of the. T.lnitid
States, were explored by Mr, Owen; the geologist of
the State of Indiana,'undet the instructions from the
Treasury.Departmcnt, and in compliance with a zee
solution ofthe /louse of Representatives, passed Sat
Febinary, 1599. The able report adds gentleman,
publielied as document No. 239, House of Represent.
tatives, first session of 26111 Congress, shows that
these lands include all the productivemines, and the
entire region in which ; from observations during hi.
survey, there is reason to believe that valuable veine
of ore may readily be found. Further, that in
the lead mines of Illinois, lowa, and Wisconsin,
though wily partially worked, produced upwards of
thirty millions pounds of lead—those of Illinois
yielding their full: preportien—and that the whole,:
district, ifproperly mined, would yield one hundied,
and fitly millions pounds per annum. •
Those lands being situated MI and near,the Mira.
sissippi and Fever rivers, the cost of transporting the -
products of them to St. Louis is only about fifteen • .
cents per hundred pounds. The soil is of excelletit
quality, and yields abundantly all the produpts of
that latitude. .
The lands in the SHAWNEETOWN district ham , •
( not been. explored rug fully an those in Dixon. • Re.
cent discoveries have been made, however, of rich
veins of the sulphuret of lead and eine ' contiguous •
to and on both sides of these' lands, indicating-ths ; _-
existence of similar deposites within them. The fa,
cilities for manufacturing v.hite and red lead •.
'represented as being ample; and as the 1488,4 '
situated within about seven mites of the Ohio river,.,_ •
the . metal, in any form, can be transported to all the"
principal markets at a trifliug cost.
