S. Loan of five millions of dollars, were opened' in the office of the Secretary of the Trea sury; - .when it was found that a larger sum had been subscribed for than was demanded. The rates probably averaged from par to five per cent. advance. Nearlp every city of the United States was repre.sented, and received a share, viz Boston, New York, Philadelphia, Baltimore, Washington, D. C. Charleston, S. C., Plymouth, Mass., and Montpelier, Art. The particulars have not trans pired. Col. Benton promises to be the moving spirit among the supporters of the administration in the Senate. The army estimates are ready, and fall very short of what was anticipated. The rumor that Mr. Burl ,will leave the Patent office for the editorship of the New Hampshire Telegraph is most likely to proye true. Some assert that Mr. King, our able Minister to France, just returned from Paris, will take the State Department, am: that Mr. Buchanan will go to France. Gen; Kearney may or may not remain in Cali fornia, where he now undoubtedly is, but request an appointment where he will have some fighting. The Eastern Shore of Mexico is, perhaps,,quite as agreeable to him as the Pacific. If Gen. Kearney were to leave, Col. Mason would succeed him in command. Little news is now expected.from Gen. Taylor beyond the s official list of the killed and wounded at the battle of Monterey. This is a busy day in all the Departments, where despatches are still preparing for Europe. Europe, I think, will give us no trouble for some time. In a few days the - experiments with the gun- cotton will be applied to cannon. Little doubt is entertained but they will prove quite satisfactory, Our information from Delaware is to the effect that Mr. Thrap, the democratic candidate for Gov ernor, is elected by a majority of 137; and that Mr. Houston, whig, is elected to Congress by a majority of 98.. The wbigs have one majority in each branch of the Legislature, which secures to them the United States Senator, to be elected this winter. HEALTH OF THE GOYEHEOH ELECT OF NEW Yoax.—There have been various contradictory ru mors respecting the health of Mr. Young, the Gov- ernor elect in the Empire State. There is no doubt but that he is laboring under Phthisis Put monalis, a recovery from which is extremely rare. The Rochester Advertiser says: "We learn from two gentlemen who came from near Genesee yesterday, that Mr. Young was un derstood to be much worse, and. to be confined to his room. We hope it may prove a mistake.— Mr. Yoting's health is in a very precarious state; and we learn from one of his consulting physicians, that, in his opinion, Mr. Young's lungs are too much diseased to render recovery at all probable." INTERESTING NEWS FROM MONTEREY Curious Dims of Intelligence.—Sunta Anna turned' Postorastert—.Reading U. S. Despatches and La-1 dies' Lola Letters, etc. "Everything begins to assume a quiet aspect in this region. "Families are returning, confidence is taking the place of distrust towards us with the Mexicans, and I believe that a majority of the best people here are glad that our Army has driven off Ampd dia and thievish soldiery." "The "retailers of ardent spirits have nearly all been ferretted out and compelled to maws or shut up shop, "Yesterday afternoon two Mexican officers, who were leaving the city, called on General Worth.— Soon after leaving him, and just after passing through the middle plaza, the orderly of one of them, who rode a short distance behind, was shot through the heart by a, discharged volunteer Ran ger. "The feelings of the Army were very much out raged by this diabolical act. The perpetrators of tae foul deed,is now in limbo, and will, 1 trust, be hung- Two U. S. mails from Cam argo, for the Army have been captured by Ampudids scouts. They contain despatches from government, and letters for the troops from their families. Gen. Taylor sent for one of the missing mails. but Ampudia said he had forwarded it to Santa Anna! One letter humorously says: ~ .As for letters and papers, we never expect to see any more as long as Ampudia is permitted to act as Postmaster General for our Army." The writer adds: "It is to be hoped that after Ampudia and all his officers and wives and concu bines and Santa Anna shall have read these letters, they will be returned to us . .The ladies who have husbands or lovers in the Army will have the satisfaction of knowing that their letters have been read by the illustrisus Am. pudia. It is to be hoped that our wives have written us very becoming letters, and that they have been mum un family secrets. "Gen. Taylor keeps his own counsel respecting the nature of the instructions received from Wash. ington. “The-Bishop's Palace and heights back of the town are not garrisoned, the troops having been withdrawn into town, and there no piquet station• ed on the Saltillo road in that vicinity:, P.
