BY LAST NIGHT'S MAIL
LATE FROM Input
The steamships Galveston and McKim, arrived
at New Orleans on the Ist instant, ftom Brazos
Santiago via Galveston, having left tht former
place on the 29th and the latter on the 30th ult.
We make the following extracts from the N. 0.
Delta of the 3d inst.
Momrsnsr, Mexico, Oct. 16, 1846.
Centletnen:—A chance offers t3send a line, which
I must write in haste, as the gentleman who takes
it will be off in a few minutes. Gen. Wool, cros-I
sed the Rio Grande thirteen days ago on his way to
Monclovs. A train.of fifteen hundred mules arri
ved from camargo a few days since, with provis
ions. Two thousand mules have been hiredbt this
place for the use of the Army, at 37} cents per
day each,
Lieut. Graham's remains were followed to the
grave three days since, by "Gen. Taylor and nearly
all the officers.
No news yet from the ftret mail that was captur
ed by the enemy Another large mail started from
Camargo a kw days ago. (the sth inst.) which
shared the fait of the first This makes two im
portant mails that have been captured from us
within a month. The last was taken out of the
mule train.
The last news had of Ampudia is, that he, with ,
the army, have:left Saltillo and gone further into
the interior. From all we can learn here, Santa
Anna does not appear to be firmly settled in pow
er, and the withdrawal of the army towards Mex
ico may be necessary to effect some political pur
' poses.
Santa - Anna is at San Luis Potosi, but is- doing'
nothin g :- He sustains -Ampatlis in- his late. con
duct. The fever and ague is spreading through,
the army at a fearful rate. .
The Matamoras Flag of the 21th Oct., gives a
translation of a correspondence between Gen. Tay
lor and Gov; Morales, of Nueva Leon, from a week
ly paper published at Monterey on the 6th.
The first of these letters begs of Gen. Taylor to
insure the safety of the Mexican population by
proper orders to his army.
In reply, • Gen. Taylor says:,"l have to inform
you that the rights of individuals who are not hos
tile, pirtitularly women and children, will be re.
spected, but they cannot be permitted to leave the
city."
MASSACHLSETTS ELECTION.—The 13oston Post
says: "The Congresional Districts are well arrang
ed for Whig success. On the vote for Governor
we have returns from several counties, all in favor
of the Whigs.
The Whigs have electei their Governor, Lieut.
Governor. a majority in the Legislature, and suc
ceeded in all the Congressioal districts.
The democratic vote is unusually small. We
will go to bed and sleep as well as we can."
