Hey West Almost Wildly Destroyed
Total Loos ofßatentte cutter Morrill.
From the N. Orleans Picayune, of 23d ult.
Terrific.. Gale in the Gulf-=.-Wreck of U. S. Brig
Perry—Loss of Revenue Cutter Morris—Total
Destruction of Key Trest=Fifty Lives Lost—bn
, tnense Destruction of Property
The'schooner Sarah Churchman, Capt. Baymore,
from Philadelphia, mitt Key West, for Brazos San.
tiago, arrived :at the North East Papa on Wednes
day morning, the list, and •• landed. Commodore
Stoat and son from the Pacific, and Lient Wm, C.
Pease, of the revenue service, bearer of deapatches
to Washington. They came up to New Orleans
on the evening of the 22d ult., on the tow-boat
Jefferson..
To Lieut Pease we are indebted for the details
of a terrible gale in the Gulf, of a fury uneiam
pled, and from which we must not expect to hear
all the deplorable effects for-many weeks. We
will begin with the gale as it was felt at Key West.
The gale commenced blowing from north east
on' the miming of the II th inst. By 1 o'clock it
blew X perfect hurricane. 'The tide rose rapidly,
and the storm raged with incredible violence until
near midnight, when it. abated, Ou the 12th it
blevea moderate gale, and gradually subsided.—
Every dwelling house, save five or six, at - Key
Wenit, were destroyed or unroofed.
The Cu.stint House was blown down. • The Ma
rine Hospital unroofed, and it is supposed the Gov.
emment property destroyed to the amount 0f5300,-
000; Tulle's wharf disappeared, aid the Salt
Works destroyed.
The U. S. Barracks were injured, but suffered
less. than any other building. Many families turn
ed out houseless, but the United States Quarter
master came promptly to their assistance.
The loss oflife is great. Marl were drownel,
and many killed by falling buildings. Key West
light house and building are entirely gone. The
spot where they stood is covered by, a white sand
beach. Fourteen souls perished, in these buildings.
Sand's Key light house has totally disappeared
with the buildinn connected with it. The occu.
pardnuf this too have perished.
The light ship in the northwest passage dragged
her moorings and went to sea, but she was recover
ed• and returned to her position.
The agent of the underwriters was doing every
thing in his power to save property. Very great
danger is to be apprehended from the lose of the
light houses to vessels from Europe, and the north,
bound to the Gulf.
The loss °Cafe cutter Morris is described to us
in a letter from an officer on board.
The U. S. brig Perry was in the same gale, or
tornado, driven with resistless force before the
wind,.but was finally , run ashore after all hopes of
saving her was gone, and in all probability will be
saved: .
An the liver 00 Indian Key and Key Bacas are
eased, and it is hoped all .the crews of the wreck
ing iessels.
The captain of the cutter Morris eared the pro
duce, the cello of one schooner, and distributed it,
through the iNfethodist minister, to those in need
of the, necessaries of life.
All the warehouses arc either blown down or
unroofed at Key West. The streets are full of
lumber, and nut six out of six hundred houses but
What are either unroofed or blown down. The
current ran six miles an hour through Key West.
The light houses at this place and San Key are
washed sway, and not a vestige- of them is to be
seen. .Sime cotton has drifted into the harbor,
and some vessel, loaded. with cotton, and not yet
heard from, must have been in the' hurricane, and
suffered from its violence.
A schooner with a new 'anthem for Tortugas
light house is lost, with liar cargo. All hands ea.
ved.
The white water now extends sixty and seventy
miles to the southai4 of Tortugas. The govern
ment will lose by the storm the revenue cutter
Morris, and brig Perry, two light house fortifica
tier's, custom house and hospital—sat far from
$200.000.
Many vessels doubtless will get ashore, from the
fact of Sand Key light house bring gone.
Dead bodies are occasionally dug out from un
der the ruins, and none can tell bow many there
are remaining. As far as ascertained, fifty peridns
have lost their lives, and it is singular that sii-lew
are dead or injured.
Timber, slate, Bm., and buildings failing invery
direction. Stone could not with, stand the gale, and
all seemed to be going to destruction.
Many persons escaped in boats and held on to
trees, expecting every moment to be washed away.
The scene was awful in the extreme.
The two United States vessels wrecked, are thus
noticed in the list of marine disasters iu the Pica.
yune:—
"U. S. .brig Perry, Blake, from Havana, for
Charleston, with Corn. Sloat on board from the Pa:
clue, ashore near Sombrero Shoal, inside of the
reef, both masts gone, anchoi, guns, &e., thrown
overboard: The vessels lies in 11 feet water and
may be got off; all hands saved. U. S. revenue
cutter Morris. Walden, ashore about three miles
from Key West, in 2i feet water, with loss of both
masts, anchors, chains, guns, bulwarks, &c., and
one mile from the channel; probably a total loss.
There is a list given of about thirty vessels
ashore and damaged, none pf which, however, are
from this port,
The report'of the officer of the cutter MO',
closes as follows:
40n bronday morning, the 12th, we ascertained
that the vessel had drifted about three miles, and
was o' the northwest shoal, in two feet of water.
Around us lay vessels of alt descriptions not one
rode out the hurricane in safety.
"One ship near us on her beam ends, the Eben
Preble, of i Boston: two bits and three schooners
dismasted and ashore in about the same depth of
water as we have. One hull of a vessel sunk, And
four Vessels bottom up. Our decks were covered
with sand, and the bottom appeared to be iq mo,
tion during the hurricane."
Tire G.wverroir..,-This fine ship left, or was to
leave, at a late homiest night, for Brazos Santiago.
Maj. Graham goes on her with despatches for Gen.
Taylor. Lieut. Kearney's company of dragoons
go over on her. We learn, too, that some of the
Kentucky regiment, who srrived on the. Day from
Lavacca on Wednesday, seized this opportunity of
reaching Matamoros. Of these some are low in
health, but their spirits were superior to bodily in
firmities, and they would not lose the opportunity
of teaching the field .of active service.
AxpuoiA,.—.We learn from an officer who was
at Monterey on the 6th instant, that in two days
after 'the evacuation of the city, Gen. Ampudia wax
removed from the command of the Mexican army
by ;a council of officers, and that Gen. Mejia was
restored thereto. The incapacity of Ampudia is
assigned for this important move. This intelli
gence was fully credited in our camp at Monterey
on jhe 6th instant, but must be taken with grains
of allowance.
