lieved our citizens of the painful suspense which
they have labored tinder.for several days.
Our advices front Monterey, came down to the
6th of October. The city is in the quiet occupa
tion of our troops: .
The report of the death:of-Col. McClung, of the
Mississippi volunteers, is unfounded; he was impro
ving. Lieut. Dilworth, of the first infantry, has
died of his wounds Lieut. Graham, of the 9th in.
fantry was still alive, and hopes were 'entertained
that he would recover. '
The death' of Mr. Herman S. Thomas, of Har
ford county, MI, will be deeply felt in his native
State. He had joined McCullough's Rangers to
see active service, and fell in storming the second
height.
• Capt. Owen, formerly-lieutenant of the Baltimore
battalion, left Monterey on the 6th of October,
and furnishes the Picayune with many interesting
details. He sari the American loss in the three
actions is set down at 561 killed and wounded.
The Mexican loss - has not beerr, and probably
never will be ascertained with certainty. It is be.
tiered to exceed 1,000. ; ,
The steamer Col. Harney, with government
stores, was lost, with fifteen lives, on the 12th inst.,
at the mouth of the Rio Grande.
An' express had arrived at Monterey that Gen
Wool; with 3,500 men,.was to leave San Antonia
the 28th of September, for Chihuahua.

MONTEREY, Sept. ‘,29, .5, P. M.
An eipiess rider has. this moment arrived from
Salinas; which place he lelt this morning. It is
only a days ride this side of Saltillo, and he states,
on the authority of the Mexicans, that Santa Anna
arrived at that city yesterday morning or the even
ing previous,' and at once commenced fortifying
the place with vigor. He had no less than 13,000
men with him, which, added to those which left
here under Atnpudia, will swell his army to over
20,000 men.
Report further has it, that he is to erect works
and batteries close by the Rineonnado, the limits
of our lines, by the close of the 60 days truce. Ii
all this should prove - true the army may have
more bloody work to do than ever.
One thing is certain , . Santa Anna was hourly ex
pected here when Gen.; Taylor arrived. and Many
think that Ampudias'reason fur wishing to retire
was:the fact that he foUnd himsellto a degree sur
rounded after the successes of' the 2d division, and
was anxious to form's junction with his master on
the best terms he could Make. We shall know
more about this matter in a day or two.
The following order, of Gen. Taylor announcing

have beeit granted' as were. considered due to the
