lag ealMly at the result, we have every thing. to
'
cheer us up, and make us hope- for the eventual
overthrow of Federaligm is this county.
During, the recent campaign the federal party
had every thing in their favor in this county.--I
powerful Their accustomed majority was to them /
.'a castle's strength," and with it they imagined
they could "laugh a siege to scorn." The result to
Item is a galling defeat and withering overthrow!
A majority, a single vote less than 2500, is to them
a disgraceful defeat ,We have reduced their ma- 1
jority in this county at.least one half, and by the
time another election rolls around we shall sweep
away the balance, and consign Allegheny Federal
-ism to the tomb of the Capulets!
. We repeat it again, that the federal party in this
county had everything in their favor during' the
recent campaign. The unfortunate want of una
. nimity which existed in our ranks to a considera
ble extent, injured the prospects of our ticket a
great deal, and the result clearly shows that a large,
number of democrats did not vote for all our tick
et. However much this is 'to be lamented, it can
not now be .helped. We endeavored to impress
upon the mind of every good democrat, that it was!
his duty to support xv - swi Mast on the democratic
ticket;—we showed the bad consequences- that
would flow from any other course. But it appears
notwithstanding all our entreaties, some orour
friends did not do their whole duty. We sincerely
trust that such a thing Will not occur again. In /
addition to all this, the enactment of a new Rev
enue Law on the part of Congress, was seized upon
by the Federalists as a Suitable matter out of which
to create some political capital for themselves.- 1
They wickedly attempted to produce the belief
that the new method of raising revenue to defray
the expenses of Government, would ruin the pea-,
plc of the United States,• and more particularly the
citizettS l fAlleghehreortrilyt - However contrary
to every sound maxim of political economy such
ridiculous assertions were, yet it cannot be denied
that too many persons were "taken en" with the
silly cry about ruin and distress which were to
visit our city, spreading desolation and misery in
their track! •
With these odds against them the candidates of
the Democratic party entered the campaign, and
met their opponents before the honest yeomanry of
the'conntry. Although all the puny ammunition
of the feds was aimed at Col. McCaNn LESS, that
gentleman met them boldly, and successfully de
fended himself and his party against all. their
Quixotic assaults! lie advocated the new Tariff
law, with slightmodifications, and convinced the,
farmers of Allegheny county that that law would
benefit them in an especial manner. lie clearly
showed that the Tariff of 18 , iti is not only a Rc-1
venue, but a - Prtovvcilvz TAILIFF, and through its
operations the Farmer, the Mechanic, the Mer
chant, and even the Manufacturer, will all flourish
in their respective avocations. Indeed, the farm
ers already have discovered the important fact that I
they can purchase. clothing for their families much
cheaper now than at times when a high protective!
system was in operation; and besides this they have
an alitiost boundless i . riarket.opened for their sur•
Vita produce, and can realize excellent prices for
every article they may wish to sell.
We believe in every township where Mr. Hamp
ton and 11ICandlesS addressed the people, the
latterreceived his full party vote, and in many in.
stances he cut down the majority of our opponents.
Bit here in the two cities, and immediate vicinity,
where influences were brought to operate against
-us which could not be used in the country, our par
.ty sole has greatly fallen behind. From all we
'have learned, we are satisfied that a large number
of Democrats voted for part, and in some instances
all, of the federal ticket. It is with feelings of
pain and mortification that we allude to this mat-
ter; but our senre of day compCls us to speak
plainly, We confidently hope—nay, ire feel psi
tirbly certain, that no good democrat will hereafter
be guilty of lending his aid and influence to pro
mote the success of a party with which he can
poreibly have no community of feeling or interest.
The best of men uPll a sometimes commit errors,
and the most honest democrat will Sometimes in
advertently get astray. The future is before you,
fellow-democrats, full of hope and bright with gold

Lord Townley's Estate.
We take from the Yarmouth Register such par
ticulais of this estate as we suppose will interest
our readers. It is now understood that heirs are
found fur the properly: indeed, v‘e are told that
there are persons residing in this city, %%hose
claims as heirs are not to be overlooked,
. Lord Towaley's Erlate.--bince last week we have
obtained some additional information respecting
Lord Townley's estate, and the heirs thereof in this
country. It is said that the value of the estate is
fifty-two millions of pounds, the title to which has
tbr many years been litigated in the high court of
chancery,- England. By a recent decree of that
court, it is adjudged that three-quarters of Lord
Townley's immense estates belong to the heirs of
William, Thomas, and Aquilla Chase, end notices
have been issued and published in the English
newspapers, to said heirs, to come in and produce
their claims to the property. The other quarter of
the estate, by the same decree, is- adjudged to be
long, to a brother of William, Thomas and Acquil
la, who remained In England.
Relative to the heirs in this country nothing - very
definite is yet known. The brothers came to Ply
mouth about the year 16,:n t Aquilla settled in ,
-I , lewburyport or vicinity; Thomas probably settled
in Rhode Island; and it is known that William was
one of the first settlers in this town—Yarmouth.
He was poor, is appears from the fact that he
mortgaged his house for .A 5 He died about the
year 160 and left two EOll3, William and Benja
min. William son of William. died February
1184. He probably lived at Crocker Neck, Far
wfch, where many of his descendants now reside.
01 'Benjamin, son of William, the elder, we know!
nothing. His name we are unable to find on the
down records of Yarn - Muth, and it is supposed that
he removed when a young man to Swansea. Mass.
On account of the imperfection of our town rec
ords, it will be perhaps very difficult for all the
heirs of the three brothers to obtain legal proof of
their descent. A genealogy of the Chase family
would now be a very convenient document, but- it
is doubtful whether any has ben - kept. Others be--
sides those of the name of Chase areheirs: Many
of the Bakers, Bassetts and other families will come
in for a sha're. The heirs of -William will be enti
tled to thirteen millions.
It is certain that a large amount of property-in
England belongs to the heirs of William, Thomas
and Aquilla Chase; it is certain that William set
tled in this town. In the course of a few weeks
we hope to be able to publish, from original docu
ments, a full and particular account of the whole:
matter; meantime, we would advise the decendants
of William to examine their old deeds, wilts, and
family records, and perhaps they may find some
entry that may be useful to them.
Since writing the above, we have been engaged
in the examination of ancient records, and have
come to the conclusion that Jehn Chase, who was
herd in 1775, was son of either Aquilla or Thomas.

New Route to Orem. •
The Expositor, printed at Independence, (WO
I of the 10th ins!, contains the Report of a Commit
tee appointed by citizens of Oregon, to explore a
Southern route froth fort Hall to the Willamette
valley. The committee state , that the new route
follows the road to California about 320 miles from
Port Hall, and enters the Oregon territory by the
way of the Clamet Lake—passes through the splen
did valleys of the Rogue and Umpqua rivers, and
enters the valley of the Willamette near its South- 1
eastern extremity.
The advantage gained to the emigrant by this
route is of the greatest importance--the distance
is considerably Shortened, the grass and water
plenty, the sterile regions and dangerous crossings
of the. Snake and Columbia rivers avoided as well
as the Cascade Mountains--he may reach his place
of destination with his Wagon and property in time
to build a cabin and sow wheat before the rainy
season. This road has been explored and'will be
opened ar the expense of the citizens of Oregon, and
nothing Whatever is demanded of the emigrants.
Gov. Boggs and party with many other families
of respectability have changed their destination and
are now on their way to Oregon. Some of the em
igrants intend stopping in the Umpqua valley—
which thou'gh not so large is quite equal to the
Willamette for fertility,
A way bill fully describing the road will he pre•
pared and sent to the United States or to Fort Hall,
fof the use of the emigration of 1847, and no pilots
will be required.

Eor a series of yeais, this dependence (of the

at this time it has_reacbecka condition positively
abject. -It is not- alone ;he failure - 4# a crop that,
produces this nor.the accidental misfortunes of a 1

of her system of - government- It is but idleito
boast of national wealth, while tbe people reap not
a _tithe of their own Herein lies the se
cret
t of-her misfortunes. Industry is not rewarded,
and the-productive classes labor but from the ne
cessity of sustaining existence, .
Greater than her present dependence on us }or
breadstuffs, is that for cotton. Leaving out of con-1
sideration . the United States, the: product of the]
world could
.not keep - in action, for a single year,
the manufactories of England. Withdraw this]
staple, and thousands of her operatives would be
reduced to a condition of want, from which the
wealth of the nation could scarcely redeem them,
It is true. that oiir own export trade is mainly con
fined to this article, and that any interruption in
the usual course of business which should shut out
a market for so important a staple, would greatly
curtail the revenue of the country. But the conse.
sequence to the producer could 'not be compared
with those of the consumer.' Stocks may accurnu
late, and producers may be compelled to suspend
their usual activity, but want stares them not in
the face. They, can divert their energies to some
other object, or even lie idle for'a Benno without
experiencing serious injury. Not so to the consu
mer. Cut off the means of his industry and he
ruust-perish--and this is precisely the situation in
which the English operative is now placed. The
very life blood of the nation is dependent for its
circulation upon the friendship of another power,
and the governmer.t is not so: blind as to be re
ganlless of it.
It is as certain as it is desirable that England
will remain'at peace with this country. Acts of
aggression it were almost impossible to suppose
could ever emanate from us, end as tb England,
her own true policy must dictate amity towards a
country, whose friendship she has so much at stake
in preserving. .
