GLORIOUS VICTORY !=BALTIMORE R
DEEMED !I -
We Met the adve rsary, yesterday and conquered,
redeeming our fair'city frorq. the partial defeat of
the Wednesday previous. The contest. was unpre
cedented, bringing Pout a larger vote [however was
cast in the city before. It wilrlie seen, by"the re
turns belOw. that our.noble candidate for the Mayi
oralty, Cot Jacoba. Davies, is elected by . 1.96. ma ;
jority, the' Vote Polled being, for Davis, 8,878; for
Capt. Levering, 8,772. ' James Levegrove received
42 anit the other independent ,candidate 7 votesi
making the whtile vote cast 17,600 We cannot
better indicate the great interest taken in the lon
test than by stating these facts. The demoeratic
majority for the candidates for the first branch- of
the city council is39l, forthe second branch 182.
There is a tie in the latterand two democraticma
jority id the former, constituting; one majority on
joint ballot, though the eiti:was marked off by the
five whig commissioners, so that their party might'
always have the control in the municipal. legisla
ture. That our majority is not larger is readily
understood here, but causes and dissensions, discon
tents; and dissatisfaction, purely`local, can only be
alluded to for the intormatibri of our friends else
where. On the whole the victory is a glorious due
indeed, affording the proud es t satisfaction to the
democracy, and proving that Baltimore is beyond
doubt a democratic city.

was very dull, the whole country bejng , literally
flooded with goods, which were selling a; prices
less than in Missouri. The inhabitants had lied,

Americans; and the men to the inountainsl Anoth

Charles Jared Ingersoll.—The Whigs are morti
fied at the triumphant reelection of Mr. Ingersoll,
from the IVth District. He has, ever been a thorn
in their side. and ttiek spared- no pains to defeat
him. His efficiency, as ; si, representative, and his
fearless exposure of the rnal.practices theilgrent
Masiachusetts leader, induced the: Whigs, in 'all
parts-of the Union, - earnestly to hope for his over
throw. But the gallant Democracy of the IVth
District' were not to be - overawed. They clung
warmly to his banner. 'They rejected the appeals
of their opponents, and have returned him by an
increased majority to-the-place he is so eminently
competent to fill: ExaCtly_ in proportion to the
chagrin of his opponents` at. his re-clectioni will be
the gratification of the , DemOcracy of the whole
