Alter the lapse of about six weeks; lwas attacked
with a distressing cough' and a- violent irapy
right side., - Some ten days! after this when in a par-,
oxyam of coughing, suddenly and tn. 'cist broke, and
a large quantity of very :offensive matter; mixed
with- blood, was discharged; most of which 'found'
passage through the • opening of the wound.' From
this epening there frequently passed a quantity of
air, supposed •to issue front -the lungs. 'During - WI
this time my sufferings were almost;intolerable.
My physicians, meanwhile, paid the.strictest atten
tion to use, and did all in their power - for ziar.recov
ery. But with all their shill they could' ot reach
the scat:of distress, after the Lungs had become (affect
ed. I we:a - visited during this time by at least
-Physicians.
It was now reduced to a eertainty,that inflantation
lof the lungs was rapidly taking place; and that this
would terminate my life in a very short time, was in
the highest degree probabie.
At this critical stage, a messenger was despatched
to Cincinnati, 'and - a celebrated Physician orthat
place was consulted., Wheh he was made acquaint- -
, ed with my Situation,lic remarked that nothing could •
be donc,,by medical aid, if the constitution itself was
not suircient to throw off the disease.
My friends now despaired of my reeovery, and
had no earthly ground of hope to survive, manY.:days.
Fortunately at this juncture; I saw one'of:Dr. - Wis••
tar's Pamphlets, entitled "FainilvMettical Guide,"
or "Treatise on ConsumptiOn of the Lungs." As I
had often heard of dying men "catching atstraws, ,,

Pill differs Minn most other : preparations in not being
originally made for sale, or ;with a view to pecuniary
profit; while; as every body knows, the greatest tyro
(as a general thing) no sooner begins to dabble in

with other chaff—some lighter, Some heavier.
Whatever may be. the rationale, / must repeat
that I ain most profoundly thankful to my friends for
their diSerithination in not consigning my discovery to
that compenduoui category of "inventions that did
not answer"—of "tricks that won't wia„.7 ,
