Monday and Tuesday evenings were Fall-like in appearance. - Clouds If at the time the canal was made, our fathers had constructed a dam in the river at Mifflin, what a fine oppor tunity the present generation coming into tnauhood at this place would Lave to in dulge their boating proclivities. As the water matter stands all that we can do is to read accounts in the - newspapers of how the young men of other places, where water facilities, naturally or arti- j finally made, exist, develope themselves from pnny nothings into tough, sinewy, gigantic specimens of manhood. This health giving, muscular-developing and brain-expanding exercise is by its devotees said to be a very great ina pt ovement on each old fogy exercises as cutting wsod, or any other of the mus cular exercises or industries by which the people live ; and besides that it ia a great deal more gentefel to sit in a boat tugging at a pair cf oars as if life were at stake, dressed in tight pants and closely fitting shirt, so that all of the falevations and depressions of the body may be distinctly seen, and the develop ment of the different muscles day by day carefully noted. Barring modesty, it is a splendid sight for the artistic eye to see people dressed a? nearly naked as they can be without being in that natural state. How we all sigh when we read of the boat races Regatta of the College boys and sporting fraternity, and feel as if we belonged to the most isolated of communities. Cannot some one build a dam or constinct a " lakelet I'' With such growing, present day no lions, it is no wonder that the villagers here have been on the lookout for Cloud, the ''oarman," who is rowing bis wr.y through rivers and canals and riding on railroad cars, from Philadelphia to New Orleans, ever since he left the former place With snch notion of pleasure aud of the method of physical framing it is no wonder that Cloud has been more talked of than the great fires that almost daily devastate our towns and cities, aud entail misery aud ruin on thousands. What are such calamities compared to muscular development and healthy ex ercise. Fires and cholera and other ca lamities are evils that come by accident, filth, carelessness and tbe hands of bad men, but muscular development comes only by hard work. 'Everybody" wanted to see "Cloud." Ou Monday a despatch something like the following was read in the vil ?age : TllOM KOWTOWS. Aug. 4. "Hands on third track rcpurt Cloud as on his war up the canal. lie raiy be expected at .Miffiin at about 7 o'clock this evening." That was enougY At about the hour designated people of all sizes, colors, ages and conditions in life congregated at the canal . bridge, that being the place from which the best view of the ap proaching boatn:an could bo had. A haudicU buys, mure ur tees, ns Uitj law vers say when they are not exactly sure of their number, hastened down along the caual to meet and greet the hero on his weniy way. A deputation of onr distinguished young citizens, consisting of Thomas J. Frow, just.iu from Texas, E. S. Paiker, banker, aud Win. J. Jack man, or.e of the editors of the Demo erat and Register, eaunteied down the towpath, overflowing, as all others were, with good feelings, to tender the hospi tality and freedom of the village to the Soon a shout from the W m l(j ma of boye heralded the boat rrj proach, and the' next iustant a bra.nVuh a small red nig fluttering over its prow, shot arouud "tbe bend" into view. A large man was its only occu paut, and he tiifgeJ hard at the oars He was evidently much fatigued, for his boat zigzagged across the canal from side to side, and occasionally he almost missed a stroke. As be drew nearer a boy on the bridge shouted, " That's a black Cloud ; that's the Pt'.terson barber, the balloonist, the rope walker !'' And then followed a shout of mirth aud uproarous laughter. The disappointment was taken good bumoredly ; but the Professor, not knowing how the burlesque and sale might be received, rowed his boat to Elder's wharf, one hundred yards below the bridge, and (here landed and walked up Water street to his house. As he sauntered across Bridge street thecrowd tbat had congregated there greeted him with cheers, which he recognized by raising his hat a number of times. It was a "tip-top" burlesque on the Regat ta business, and the people saw it- If we bad a boat club it would about row them out of existence. While all this was taking place the real Cloud was on tbe cars between this place and Altoona, going to the latter place as fast as the Fast Line could con- ve i be Clouds have passed and d we have a calm. The financial management o4 the county for some years to come if eTer should not be confined, to party. The finance of the eounty is a question of dollars and cents, a question of taxation, not a question of poll tics. With tbe view of offering at the pri mary election of the Republican party a man who, if nominated, can command at the gen eral election the confidence of Lis fellow citizens, irrespective of party or politics, to such a degree that he may be elected a mem ber of the board of County Commissioners, I ask you to announoe J. Banes Wilsou, of Oakland Mills, as a candidate for that offiae. Mr. Wilson's integrity and business qualifi cations are conceded and need not be refer red to. FERMANAGH. SENATE. Ma. Euitob : As the time is drawing near wVen tbe Republicans of this county must select a standard bearer in the Senatorial contest, we would annonnce tbe name of Da. J. P. Sterrett, of Bettle township. In a district where the party lines ere so closely drawn, we "must select our best man one who, with n incorruptible eharaotf and personal popularity, will run the full party vote, and draw from the Democratic ranks. Da. Stkrrett in his lata canvass showed that he is the strongest candidate we can get in this county, and there are many circum stances that indicate that if sustained -by the Republicans of this ccunty, he will get tbe nomination in the district. TUSCARORA. SHERIFF. Mb. Editor : Permit me through your col umns to present the came of James W. Dean, of Patterson, a a cnJitiato for Sheriff of Juniata county, subject to Republican uaes. Mr Dean has been a iife-lotg Republican ; is a sober, industrious man, served bis country faithfully in tLe late war, and if elec ted will make an obliging officer. PATTERSON. SHERIFF. Jacob Levoh, of Milf. rd township, is a suitabla person to fill tho office of Sheriff of Juniata county. He is abundantly qualified fcr the place, and if nominated by the Re publican party, of which he hag always been a member, he will become a strong candidate before the people, for the reason that the tax-paying community, irrespeotive of partr. that the county offices be so distributed that tbe proper restraints be put upon tbe finan cial management of the county during the repairing :t rebuilding of Court House. I therefore ask that you announce Jacob Lex- ox as a candidate for Sheriff. MIFFLIXTOWX. Married : W1NEOARDNER UCSSLER July 31st, by Rev. H. C.
