The ftful act dreadful series of mur

cuniv, Kau?a, continues to be the all
abawliiig topic of convtreation through
out the Slate, ami to excite wonder and
nmnzotl horror all over the nation. The
render houuo i a small rudo frame

t.ivtninp fuhstunce between its floor
and tl.- r-'!rg of ihe pointed roof. In

two ci.ir.p aitmrnts, tut no wall had ever
! i rn tnmie, other than a whito cotton
c'.'iih hr.rg in the rear apartment and
against these npiighls.
The table to which the giieMs were
fcated, was placed directly over the trap
door, so that the guest's back was to
and againt't the white curtain. In this j
position it was an easy tiling lor the
male vilii.itis in the front apartment to
etiikc the form clearly lined against the
white cl'.ith, and when the blows of the
fledge hammer had knocked the victim,
w i;h a crnvbed and broken skull, sense
less to the floor, for the female fiends in
tht back rocn to cut tie throat.
The execution was as simple as it was
dreadful, but, though it would seem re
fistai.ee to such well planned murder of
the trusting and unsuspecting was impos
sible, the walla gave silent evidence that
si'iae f the murdered ones had not been
eei.t to their donm without au effort to
save their lives. No less than a dozen
buiiet Lobs in the sides and roof of the
bi u;e attest that crnit-d men, when struck
down so relentlessly, had attempted to
shoot their murderers, hut unfortuuately,
the ai:us hud Let n wild, and the murder
ers are ver-ciwd for the hempen baiters
With the exception of Dr. York and
Henry F M'Kenzee, G. W. Longcor
and daughter, whose families took charge
t f their lemuins and buried them at In
dependence, the bodies of those found in
the g trd. n grivs were silently taken
away by men who knew them not, yet
longed for vengeance on their assassins,
to the base of a high mound, about a
i; i!e to ihe sor.'.heast of the devil's kitch
en, and there a second time lettuned to
ti e earth, to !!. i p until the final iesur
section Although for the past three years this
section las teen infested with horse
thieves and murderers, and this known
to tveiy one about the county, it is pro
bable the same stale of affairs might
l.ave continued for an indefinite p-riod
b..d not the minder of Pr. York, a man
of family, f: lends and reputation, lul to
the exposure. Men have bteu missed,
and bodies f.,ut:d of murdered men for
three yars j a.-t, and ' vigilance com
nit:ers" have hunted and diivea some
situ from the country, but it would now
seem r.s though the leaders of thce regu
inters were thtmselves the villians, and
honest men had been falsely aud foully
supected. and diiven from their bom s.
Known villians have for that time been
sent to the penitentiary only to be par
doned oat by Governors.
And even the band of seventy five
aimed and honest men who scoured the
country in search of Dr. York, w hen it
was learned that be was missing, seeincd
to have very little judgement or discre
tion. On the of last March, Col.
York and Mr Johnson visited the Ben
der house, to which they bad tracked
lr. York, and endeavored to coax some
iufouraation from them, but they would
tell nothing On the 3rd if Apiil this!
armed band visited the house with the
sole object of finding the murderers of
Dr. York, yet they did not notice the
bullet boles in the house, and allowed
themselves to be folded by au assumed
stupidity which was t!.o disgust of most
beliish cunning.
The old hag sat in urn and gloomy,
pretending she couid not understand or
speak English, old Bender said nothing.
Kate, she of the evil eye, denied all
knowledge of the lost, and the younger
male villiau fooled them .with a well
made up story. He said at about the
time they said Dr. York was missed, he,
Bender, bad been shot at in a lonesome
place near Drum creek, one evening,
and it must have hern by those who kill
:d the Doctor, lie described tin; place
minutely took them to it. and it was
found as he said, anil they half believed
bis story, and returmed with him
While coming from the creek John
told Colonel York that his sister
could do anything, that she could con
trol the Devil, and that the Levil did
her bidding. When they returned to
the house Col. York tried to induce this
wonderful mistress of the Devil to reveal
the whereabouts of the body of his bro
ther. She positively refused her .Satanic
aid at. this time, giving as her reason
therefor that she could uot do so in the
day tiuie. and whilu there and ' so many
men aud so much noise about.
This pretended sorceress and real
fiend then told Col. Yo:k privately that
if he would come the next night. Friday,
when best she worked her spells, and
bring only one man with him, she would
take him to the grave of the murdered
brother Had the Col. been so foolish
as to believe the mysterious power of the
creature there la no daubt she would
have proved ber promises good. The
whole band then left the house.
They visited the houses of Roach and
Smith and Harness, at Ladore, and
made many threats but accomplished no
thing. Their intent was good, but they
lacked an experienced detective for a
leader. So strong was their convictiou, ;
however, of the guilt of the Roaches and
the Renders that they would have hung j
them thrm if it Lth not been for the
persuasions of Cnl. York and a few j
others, who were determined that none
but the known guilty should suffer Of
eoirso this visit alarmed the Renders '
aad they fled.
