It is not definitely known how the accident occur red. The boy says he slipped and fell while endeavoring to get off the track, others say that he attempted to get on the train. This should be another warn ing to boys and everybody who are in the habit of walking on railroads, or who are in the worse habit of jumping off trains while in motion. Ec. The tyrant, the bigamist, and the po lygamist are all restrained by society in the practice of their passions, for the reason that they debauch society. So ciety no longer believes that such people are deprived of their liberty when they are prevented by law from giving license to their desires. Society now believes that such liberty is destructive of the beet interests of the whole people, hence these desires and passions are kept in subjugation by law. But society has not yet become intelligent enough to see how much it is debauched by the liquor traf fie. Once it understands how wide spread the debauchery of this business is. it will remove it, as it baa in this conn try removed tyranny, bigamy, poligamy and slavery, and then express surprise that it ever tolerated snch an evil, and laugh" at itself for believing that it was taking away the people's liberty. Jonathan ADDRESS To the Citizens of JuniaU County. Fellow Citizens : Under the Local j Option law, enacted by the Legislature, I the entire responsibility of legalizing the traffic in intoxicating liquors, as a bever- age, is remitted to the people of each i county. On the third Friday iu March, the qualiiidd voters of Juuiata county will determine, as they may vote "For License" or "Against License," whether this traffic shall continue in our county for the coining three years or not. There can be no escape from this responsibility, i It must be shared by every citizen. To aid you iu making a right decision, we respectfully present the following statis tics, carefully collated from official sour ces : i The amount of liquor consumed annu ally iu Pennsylvania, including whicky, imported spirit?, imported wine, Eative brandies, wines and coidials, ale, beer ' and porter, is 54,000,000 gallons ; valued r " . The law makes ample provi-ions for such sale under proper restriction. We do not claim that roting "Against License," will entirely suppress intemper ance It will however, largely lesson the evi s and diminish pauperism and crime lower taxation add largely to the industrial resources of the country save the rising generation promote vir tue and place the traffic under the ban of law, insteadof dignifying it by gov ernmental protection. That liquors may be sold and u?t d to some extent as a bev erage, iu defiance of law, is nn reason why their sale should be legalized. We have stringent laws against Gambling That illicit gambling taken plats, not withstanding, is no reason why gambling houses should be licensed and thrown open to the public, as enures for the wiling, the iuexpeiteuced, the weak, or the vicious. Wfc appeal to tax payers and to all citizens who rare for tho public good ; who cure for tho welfare of their own families ; who care for the comfort and happiness of their fellow-men ; who care to carry peace and joy into discordant and sorrowing households ; who would replace idleiiess with industry, poverty with plenty, extravagance with economy to go to the polls and vote "Against Lice.nsk" W.C LAIRD, 1 aj A l T'O J I. t TIM L'C VtTIT J-COM.
