The popularity of the Local Option law appears to be gaining ground, all over the State, with wonderful rapidity, and the result of the elections will be al most unanimously in its favor. Tem perance men are not standing alone in the ranks of its forces, but men of intem perate habits, who know and feel, and see the evils wrought by the whiskey traffic, are anxious to have the tempter removed from their reach We hope to see the day, aud that very soon, when a drunken man will be as great a curiosity iu IVnosylvania as a leper. It is not necessary to urge tbe ladies to nee their mighty influence, in favor of Local Op tion, as that influence with a wonderful unanimity, is at work. Of course we speak of ladies, aud not of females who live by their crimes ; for piwtitutiou and drunkenness are twin crimes. Leicis-i burg ChroKkfc Temperamcr Meeting. A meeting of the citizens of Tuscarora and ad joining townships, was held in the U. P. Church, at McCoysville, Jan. 23, 1873, to discusf the Local Option law. The meeting was ornanised by calling Hon. Joseph Pomeroy to the chair. R A. Patterson, Wm. Creighton, Wil son Palm, J. L. Barton, John Randolph, Stephen Ilarlen, M. Kunkle and Wm. Milliken were selected as Vice Presidents, and James J. Patterson and J. C. Craw ford, Secretaries. The meeting was opened with prayer by Rev. Sbiudle. The Chair then forci bly addressed the meeting, and was fol lowed by Revs. Shiudle, Wallen, Shry- ock, Msgill aud others. On motion the Chair appointed the fol lowing commi'tee on resolution : George McCulloch, Kliaa Gruvcr, John Ran J !olph, A. J. Howell, James Irwin, Prof. James J Patterson. The committee, through their chairman, reported the fol lowing preamble and resolutions, which were cnnniinously adopted : Whereas, In the proriJcuce of God, the people of Pennsylvania are called upon by an act of the .Legislature to de cide by ballot fur or njaiutl the license of the trams m intoxicating liquors as a beverage, on the third Friday of March, 1S73. Axn wnntR-.s, The people of Pecn Ivsuia having elected a convention to amend the State C .oi-lilutioii, this seems, i therefore, the proper time to incorporate in said instrument the total prohibition of j the sale of intoxicating liquors as a bev j erase. j Axt) wiicrsas. We have learned that j efforts are being made to repeal the Local Option law, so as to prevent its coming ' before the people, therefore, Rcsolccd, That we petition the Consti tutional Convention to amend the Con stitution so as to restrict the Legislature from passing license laws for the sale of intoxicating liquors as a beverage, and submit it to a vote of the people with the other amendments. RrtolveJ, That this meeting, thankful for the opportunity afforded of discussing the question of license or no license) will improve it to the best of our ability by endeavoring to afford light npon the sub ject, and by stirring up and arousing onr fellow-citizens to the duty of voting against the Iiqnor license system Uetoleetl, That we do most earnestly protest against the repeal of the Local Option Law, and urge that it be submit ted to a vote of the people. RtvJctd, That we will remonstrate against any action of legislation- repeal ing that law. Rrtolred, That the proceedings of this meeting be published in the county pa peri. Jas J. Tattrrroji, J. C. But our slogan friend In his office at an alloy's end, Did not comprehend The trnth of the story, Quoth he, the thermometer shall be spliced, In a thrice, to tell of the coIJ, Oh ! the horrible cold. He grasped his pen and a line quilled. To relieve his mind that was dreadfully rilled. At the words that were spoken Of "the snow, oh ! the beautiful snow." He did not see M The people with cheerful glee On runners were gliding to trade. At the store of Tilten & Espenschade j He felt but the blast that o'er the snow swept. And he louder cried, "The cold, oh ! the duced cold." He said, "To the South I'll go, Where the people in the warm move slow, Where the sun warms up a genial clime, Where the planters kill the soil by never using manrue or lime." Then rolled, and be groaned in his bed, la the morning at eight, I don't know why Schweier will prate Of the snow, oh ! the horrible snow." He gently murmured, "I've a warm side for the South ; For the want of good men she now suf fers a drought. I s ware, I'll leave this cold. I'm bound for the South To enter tbe Patterson fold. Think of it, isn't it fine to change, when you're cold. Oh ! the beautiful South Carolina gold If dear Brother Allison leaves, How the people will sigh and grieve. And hope that bis and dear John's head May not for mischief be led In a Kn Klnx halter to tangle, That their bodies between heaven and earth may dangle. If Allison stays, and mends his ways. And sins no more, he may understand, That what is jnst said, is not for him, But to advertise the Keystone Store, "Only that, and nothing more." Tkrribi.b Accidknt. Tko Pertont S-r'ioutly Bund. On Sunday night last, an accident occurred at Jenncreville Somerset county, which might Lave re sulted in terrible destruction of life and prcperty. Services were progressing in the new Lutheran Church at that place, when suddenly the chandelier, suspend ed over the middle aUIo from the ceiling, fell to the flojr, and in a moment the flames were spreading rapidly Fortu nately the congregation did not make a stampede, but deliberately set about ex tinguishing the fire. It was finally ac complished, but not before a little child, name uuknown, and a Miss Deiiz, were so seriously burned that their lives are despaired of. There were about five hun dred people in the church. Ex. This is harvest week for the law- yers. Shot at and Mhseu. A correspon dent writiug from the Aqueduct. Perry county, under date of yesterday , says : About three o'clock this morning the night operator, Mr. W. S. Sheridan, em ployed by the Pennsylvania railroad company, at this point, was attacked by several ruffians while crossing the aque duct- Several shots were fired at him, which fortunately did not hit him, al though the robbers were but a few yards from him. He sneeeeded in escaping from them and reported the fact to the day operator, who, armed to the teeth and accompanied by him and the night watchman, made a thorough search for the parties, but did not succeed in find ing them, they, no doubt, making for un known parts after failing in their nnder taking. It seems they mistook the night oper ator for the agent here, who fortunately bad crossed the bridge in the early part of the evening The bridge is a very dangerous crossing place after night.
