Joyce cbil !reu, in Btteej'a woods, ad

brother and sister, to gather spring flow
ers, one April morning, five years ago
An ou:rage ?ome;hing like this of which
bis young nice, Gcorgianna Loveriug,
has row been made the victim, wae com
mitted upon tins joung Joyce girl, her
screams and those of her brother being
stopped, one by sudden murder, aud tbe
other by stuffing her moutli with grass.
The wretch seems to be the most iuha
man aud monstrous criminal of modern
times, or, indeed, of any time. It now
appears that sometime since Evans gave
bis mother a dose of medicine (pretend
ing to doctor her) on the Stafford poor
farm, from which she immediately died.
Several years ago a girl was missing in
Derry, and has never been found. As
he lived there then he no doubt murder
ed ber, and it is suspected now that he
murdered bis own wife and child. It is
rtated that not long since he insulted this
came Georgianna Loveriug, and, after
apologizing, gave her a dresa pattern.
He has admitted that after outraging the
girl he choked her to death. The au

of the total depravi ty to which
a long indulgence of base passioua and
practices can reduce a human being. He
will be swubg, like a dog, from the gal

such an inconceivable career of crime as
bis t To ehow tbe nttcr devilisbnrss of
the creature, he not only did all this, but
he went into it all deliberately calcu
latingly. He plotted for months how he
could induce bis little niece to go out
into tLe woods where he was hidden,
watching for her.
The idolatora of beauty the Chiuese
are forever at the feet of beings whom
they adore. When any of their wives
are indisposed tbey fasten a silken thread
round her wrist, the cord of which is giv
en to a physician, aud it is only by the
motion which tbe pulsation communtii

the sta e of his patient. This precaution
