were anxious, too, to aee if not to get a
boa constrictor of one kind or other ; for
there are two kiuda ou the island, which
may be seen alive iu the Zoological Gar

which is here called Mahajucl, is striped
as well as spotted with two patterns, one
over the ether. The Iluillia, Anaconda
or water-boa, bears only a .few round

Poison Sensations.
How a Fellow Feels H lien he is Full of
Strychnine.
From the Gold Hill (Xer.) News.
Dr. Harris, the well known aPiayer,
who resides at the lower end of town
came near being poisoned to death last
night, through taking a doee of medi
cine for theumaliiin The settlings in
the bottom of the vial settled his case.
Tbe following communication from him
received at noon to day, tells the whole
story : "Last night (Thursday) I felt a
pain ia my knee, caused by rheumatism
I got up at 10 o'clock and took a dose
of rheumatic medicine, prescribed by Dr.
Tnband, of San Francisco. There was
only one We left, and not at the time
thinking of the sediment at the bottom
of tbe vial, I took it. Half an hour af
ter, as I was lying in bed with a candle
in baud reading, I was struck senseless
and speechless. 1 he candle fell on tbe
bed, and I could neither stir nor cry ont
for a second. Luckily the shock termi
nated iu time to let me put out tbe light,
or the bouse and all would hare been
consumed. More and stronger shocks
and convulsions then followed, and,
from symptoms, I knew that I had ta
ken slrychuioe. My wife brought me
sweet oil, of which I took two doses
But, great God 1 what a torment. Shocks
and tormeuta followed from balf past ten
to twelve o'clock, when the death throes
set in. I was convulsed and felt five
shocks, like a man broken on a wheel,
and the last shock made me helpless aud
stiff I felt the earth give way, and
called my wife to me. My hauds were
crossed, bnt I could not move them, nor
any part of my body. I bade them all
good bye, and swooned. My wife sent
the children for a doctor, and Dr Kiiby
came about twelve o'clock and found me
still alive and somewhat rational, as the
oil had its effect. From then until six
o'clock this morning I had shocks like
from a galvanic battery, every few in in
utes. I could not stir hand or foot, aud
any attempt to turn my bead bronght a
shock. To tell what I suffered is impos
sible, and I had given np all thought of
life ; but soon I began to recover, and
now ten o'clock A. M. I am able to
write you this, in order that you m;iy
warn persons using this medicine to be
ware of overdose! or settlings."
Governov Saffoid, of Nevada, in a
letter to the San Diego (Cal ) Union tells
his experience iu gathering diamonds
and rubies. He went out with a friend,
and fiuding rabies as plentiful as black
berries, they picked np tbe - value of a
million or two, and bad them tested. Of
the result be says : "They proved to be
garnets, and of no value, and tbe beauti
ful dreams of schools and colleges we
wonld build np, and poor people we
would make bappv. anl we found onr-
evles. as before, struggling to make tbe
endi meet."
