First Wheat grown in America.
A mild flavor of interest attaches to
the result of antiquarian researches as 1"
tbe first wheat grown on the continent.
Its cultivation in Mexico dates back t
the time of Cortes. This adventnn-r

Spain to be introduced into his posses
sions, and a few grains of wheat stolen
from him by one of the native, about
the year 1530, furnished the seed from

through the whole Mexican region and

thin and poor; the food eaten is not prop
erly assimilated. If the usual food bas

but a cliange will affect any desirable al

bushel of Indian corn, and let it be
ground into a fine meal. This will be a

cut-food. Feed two or three quarts of
the mixture two or three times daily,

So long as the animal will eat this allow

Wurld, in an article on turkeys, has this
in relation to feeding: The practice of
most farmers who raise turkeys, is not to
feed them at all after the young birds are
six or eight weeks old. They are driven
off to the pastures or woods early iu the
morning, aud ft their living whore they
can find it. Their chief food is grasshop
pers and other insects, at.d they do the
pastures and meadows a great service in
keeping under these destructive insects.
This may be well enough where insects
and mast arc plenty, but upon many farms
the range of woodland is exceedingly litn
ited, aud the growth of tbe birds will not
be satisfactory without food from the corn
crib. They should come to the roost ev
ery night with full craws, aud if ou ex
animation this is not found to be the case,
tbey should be regularly fed once a day
at least. 1 here is no danger of fatteuiug
a young turkey on a good range in six
months. With first class stock, full feed
will make a difference of four or five
ponuds in the weight of the birds at
Thanksgiviug. Turkeys like a variety
of food, though they do very well upon
corn, which they nevsr refuse while iu
health. They are very fond of a mash
of boiled potatoes and Indiau meal, and
thrive upon it Whatever the provender
it should be fed regularly, and the birds
kept thriving from the shell to the butch
er's block.
