At Harvard College a quarter of "a

vessels passing Mount Vernon, on the
Potomac, to toll their bells in honor of

Out in Iowa a man took so much
stock in the comet business that he
forgave his enemies, paid his debts, and
made arrangements to die. He is indig
nant now at the comet. He says it cost
him the exact amouut of his indebtedness.

The new postal law, that went into
effect July l. among other good things
allows packages of dry goods, and other
merchandise, except liquid drugs, weigh
ing not over twelve ounces, to be mailed
to any part of the Union at the rate of
two cents for each two' ounces or fraction
thereof.
At Mobile on the 22ud a disturbance
was occasioned at a Republicrn meeting
by the firing of a pistol iu the crowd, by
soma unknown person, causing a general
stampede. Some say the first shot was
fired by a white man, and others say
by a negri. Three persons were woun
ded by pistol shots.
A fight is repotted between the com
mand of General Crook and the Indians
of Date Greek Reservation. General
Crook having found a party of four hun
dred Apaches on the war path attacked
them. They killed one soldier, but our
cavalry killed thirty of their number,
the rem tinder flying to- the mountains.

The late Rev. Samuel Browne, whose
ehooting of a German boy in his orchard
at cummingsville.Ohio. some weeks ago,
created such an excitement among the
Germans, and whose death occurred at
Valley Junction, Ind.. last week, has
bequeathed the sura of $150,000 for the
establishment of a university, to bear
bis name, and also the land whereon to
erect a uuiversity building and an en
dowment for professorship.
A young man in an Iowa Cathedral
created quite an excitement recently as
the marriage bans of a youthful couple
were beiug read. He arose .in meeting
and in a bind voice forbade them, giving
his reasons, one of which was that - he
had a prior claim on the young lady,
having built a house for her use as his
wife. He even read love letters in
church to prove it, and so aroused the
friends of the other side that they re
sponded vigorously, and a war of bil
lingsgate ensued which" the clergyman
was unbale to quell, and the solemn
sacrifice which bad begun had to be post
