DrMiifit ai tr 3!r;t-:Tio. As per nn
iiounceuieiit by posters, over the signa
lure of Thomas 15 Coder, Chairman of
the Gre ley -Democratic anti ring wing
commit 'ee, a meeting was held at. tin: in
tersection of two streets in Patterson, on
last Friday evi uing- Mr. Jacob Frank
presided. The assembly was more than
large enough to have filled the Court
II ous", if the meeting bad been called
for that place
Edmund S D ity. E-q , was the first
speaker. He buried the Democratic
tomahawk and scalping knife, and passed
around the calumet He did not speak
from the ol i standpoints of the Dttno
cratic party. He accepted the situation
taken by Greeley. Brown, Sumner, Trum
hull and others, and reviewed the field
from their standpoint. His address was
quite conciliatory, an 1 free from the clap
trap personal allusions that usually find
their way into Democratic speeches
E. D. Parker, Esq., was the next
speaker. He could not endorse Grant ;
Gieeb-y is bis man. He dwelt on cor
rnptinn in a general sense in matters of
the State and nation, but came down par
ticularly on the extravagance and cor
rupliou iu our own county No nation
or Mate could niduie the taxation that
Juniata comity groans under.
There was not an uubiassed man who
beard him Republican or Democrat
who did not the more respect him for his
sweeping denunciations of extravagance
and peculations. The riug that has been
manipulating the county affairs was how
ever, thrown, into a flurry. His denunci
ations bad been hurried across the river,
and quickly mouthed around among the
members of that body in .Miffliu long be
fore the meeting adjourned, and doubtless
before this time instructions have been
sent into every township how to talk
against the anti ring movement. Jack
man and bis ring had better talk about
the ring management in Juniata instead
of denouncing Hartrauft and President
Grant. The home taxes are the ones
that are burdening the people not the
State and ni-tional taxes When Demo
crats talk thus, it is an indication of the
approach of a new era
Both speeches were remirkable. but
certainly not more remarkable than was
the surrender of the Democratic organi
zation to Mr. Greeley Let the Repub
licans stand firmly, "shoulder to should
er," and when the smoke of battle has
cleared in October aed NovemW a glo
rious victory, that will settle the North
ern and American form of civilization to
a certainty for generations to come, will
reveal itself, and then for the minor re
forms. .
j. Suicide, ok Pbobablk Mckdkr in
; Lewis Township. The following are
She reports that have come"; to us in re
i gard to an occurrence that has thrown
1 the upper end of this county into an in
tense state of excitement:
On Friday week, Mrs. Mary Ann
Schell, wife of Jacob Schell residing in
the upper end of Lewis township, about
three-quarters of a mile east of Brass
tavern stand, now owned by the Snyder
brothers, went to a Mr. Robenold's, two
and one-half miles from her residence, to
assist in boiling upple butter. On Sat
nrday afternoon following the left Robe
nold's to return Lome . Not coming home
on Saturdty evening, as was exptcted by
the family, two of her sons were sent, on
Suuday morning, to discover what had
detaini d her. After they had gone about
a quarter of a mile tbey discovered her
in a hollow in the woods hanging on a
tree. A part of her clothing (her draw
ers) had beeu used in banging her. The
alarm was given and a large number of
neighbors and fiiends were attracted to
the spot. A jury was summoned by
Abm Wagner, Justice of the Peace, of
Turbutville. A physician from Turbut
ville made an examination and gave it as
his opinion that no violence had been in
flicted by a second party that it was a
case of suicide. A Muncy physician
made an examination after the body bad
been taken down and conveyed to her
home. He gave it as his opinion that
she had beeu choked to death by some
unknown person before she had been
hong np, as several marks of violence
weie found on different parts of her body
Small particles of leaves and sticks were
found on her face, which would seem to
indicate that she had been killed and left
lay on the ground, and afterwards hung
up lo avoid suspicion One of her sons
says that just before he came to ihespot
where he discovered his mother hanging,
he saw a man with a gun running away
from the place. Wbi n tdie left J'obenold'p
she was given a crock of apple butter
M il a small bucket of lard. The former
was spilled at. several places near where
the body was found, and the ground
showed figns of a scuffle. There are
vatious opinions, we are told, in reference
to this unfortunate occurrence. Some
think she was foully dealt with, while
others hold an opposite opinion. Great
excitement prevailed throughout the
neighborhood. The man w ho was seen
running away from the place, it is said,
is known by the boy who saw him ; and
the friends have euspicioi.s as t- who
killed the woman if she was killed
She was buiied on Monday evening. We
arc told that she did not bear a very
good name, and bad been in frequent
troublo with her neighbors. Sunb-jry
